Why can’t sensible policies get someone elected president?

.
President Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain are responding to the high gasoline prices by calling for off-shore oil drilling and opening up wildlife refuge areas in Alaska.

And the American public is eating this up. In fact, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been taking heat from Republicans about his refusal to go along with the increased drilling plans.
In fact, he’s taken so much heat, and lost points in the polls, that he’s starting to sing out of the Republican hymnal — and now says he would support increased drilling as part of a comprehensive energy plan.

The sad part about all this is that increased drilling of the kind suggested by Bush and McCain, won’t bring down oil prices — or at least not by much — and will take more than a decade to have any impact at all.

According to a 2004 study by the Energy Information Administration (a part of the same federal government that Bush and McCain lead), drilling in the Alaska Natural Wildlife Refuge would reduce the price of a gallon of gas by 3.5 cents — but it wouldn’t happen until 2027.

If we started drilling offshore, we could cut the price by 3 or 4 cents a gallon, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. A 1982 federal law currently prevents that because of past oil spills.

We need to face the fact that we have 3 percent of the world’s oil supply, and we consume 24 percent of the world’s oil. There’s no way

we can sustain that — no matter how much more we drill.

Speaking of drilling, if we opened up ANWR to oil exploration, what’s to prevent the oil companies from selling the oil to Asian countries if they are the highest bidder?

What we should be doing instead is developing alternative fuels and figuring out how to more efficiently use the oil we do consume.

That includes wind, solar and biomass, natural gas and any synthetic fuel we can make from coal.

But presidential candidates can’t suggest sensible policies because they will be shouted down by professional smear-merchants who believe that the American public is stupid and easily manipulated.

Unfortunately, we’re often all too eager to prove them right.

" Personally I think Dick would make a pretty good prez (then he'd have to stop listening to O'Reilly!) but I think he'd rather be czar of the world. The pay is probably better wouldn't ya think? But then the responsibility -- hmmm? Toss up Dick?... "

" Richard Mial for president! He has single handedly figured out how to save our country by NOT drilling here. Why are you opinion page editor and not Czar of the world? "

" Well first one must have a 'sensible' electorate that thinks beyond 'patriotic' nostrums and knows enough about say 'socialism' to know that American liberals are NOT 'socialists' -- something I read here EVERY day. Also we oughtn't demand 'perfection'; politicos as we have them have volatile temperments like McCain and ivy league college backgrounds like Obama and THAT isn't what's important but that they tell us the 'truth' as they see it and not pander. But then we have to 'let' them tell us things we don't like too -- say about gun love and religious literalism -- or even that nuclear energy ain't such a bad idea at that. But we want a mirror of either our best selves OR we 'imagine' the most horrid 'self' of all... "

" Since Mr. Mial claims to know the timetable for drilling for more oil, perhaps he can give us the timetable until all those alternative energy sources will be available, hmmm? And if they develop a car that will do the job, how long will it be before all of us will be able to afford one? Since you know all the pitfalls of oil, please, fill us in as to when we can expect to benefit from the alternatives. In the meantime, are we just supposed to bear with it? The American public is smart enough to know that if we had not been so silly in the past, outlawing drilling, we would not be this dependant on foreign oil. We are also smart enough to see that the democrats don't give a rat's rear end about our problems. Mrs. Pelosi made that very clear. "

" ah, the old mantra of 'develope alternate energies'. and what might those alternates be? gee, we've had solar for a few decades, along with wind and hydro. nuclear has been around a long time. as well as coal gasification and shale oil. so what are the new 'alternatives'? the bigger question is what is wrong with the old 'alternates'? oh thats right, we have the NIMBYs (not in my backyard),the BANANAs (build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything) and the NOPEs (not on planet earth). i think it's time for some people to shut the pie hole and let's expoit every form of energy we have. "

" The answer to your question Dick is quite simple and nothing new. The ignorant, no matter how intelligent, are often the angriest, and their shouting back and forth at each other tends to dominate the debate. "

happymom wrote on Aug 6, 2008 10:35 AM:

" Why is it believed that if we drill for our own oil, that we can't also be researching alternative energy sources? Why the either/or? I believe we should do both, and will if McCain is elected. If we had started retrieving our own oil thirty years ago, and built new refineries then, imagine the impact that would have on us today. Any additional supply to the oil market will affect it's price, or speculated price, so send me on up to Alaska with a big shovel and I'll start digging the first hole! "

seekthetruth wrote on Aug 6, 2008 8:15 AM:

" Remember in Nov, that Obama thinks we have 57 states and McCain thinks Pakistan borders Iraq. Neither of these choices have a clue as to what is reality. This total incompetence is the best the mass media can offer us? Our choices are between "Dumb and Dumber". No matter who wins this election, America loses! "
