Packers’ statement on the Favre trade

.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The text of a statement released Wednesday night by the Green Bay Packers on the trade of Brett Favre —

The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Brett Favre to the New York Jets. Terms of the trade are not available at this time. The two teams agreed to the trade Wednesday night.
Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy and Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson issued the following joint statement:

“Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state. It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible.

“We respect Brett’s decision that he could no longer remain here as a Packer. But there were certain things we were not willing to do because they were not in the best interest of the team. We were not going to release him nor trade him to a team within the division. When Brett ultimately decided that he still wanted to play football, but not in Green Bay, we told him that we would work to find the best solution for all parties involved. We wish Brett and his family well.

“We appreciate the tremendous passion shown by our fans. We, like them, always will see Brett Favre as a Green Bay Packer and our respect for him never will change. Moving forward, we are dedicated to delivering a successful 2008 season for all Packers fans.”

Favre leaves Green Bay as the NFL’s all-time leader in most major passing categories touchdowns (442), yards (61,655), completions (5,377) and attempts (8,758) and his 253-game starting streak intact. By playing 16 seasons in a Packers uniform (1992-2007), he matches Bart Starr (1956-71) for the longest tenure in team history among his 30 team records.

Please forgive meI misspelled words on one or more of my posts! I was wrong and I admit it. Misspelled or not the facts are the facts!!! "

" Thanks tralee,

But she (Amom) just doesn't get it...girls are never wrong and you'll never find one that admits to being wrong on anything. They just divert the attention else where so they don't look bad (in their mind). She'll just tell you that you spelled something wrong or get way off track instead of sticking to the issue at hand. "

" To Amom,

Typical girlcant admit she is wrong and then diverts the attention to something else! Yes, everyone does have a right to their own opinionsand getting back to the original statement you made Everyone who says we are not "real" fans, you are forgetting who brought all the fans to Green Bay. Brett Favre made the Packers great. I am asking again what about the 40 plus years the Packers were in existence before the Favre era??? Doesnt the Super Bowls they won previously count??? I imagine no one at all watched the Packers or rooted for them until Brett Favre came alongI guess your right.not!!! Sorry about the spelling before, I thought facts were good enough here but then again if you divert the attention to my spelling then you can't be wrong instead of replying to my post!!! "

tralee wrote on Aug 7, 2008 1:09 PM:

" amom: I think what people are trying to point out is that your statement of how Brett Favre brought the fans to the Packers is untrue. You can "think" that, but it isn't the reality of the situation. The Packers have sold out season tickets for many years before Brett Favre, and will do so many years after. To make such a statement with no facts to back it up, and have it be actually the opposite in reality, is humorous, and annoying. "

" Slinger: while I am young, I'm not a "narrow-minded mooran" (nice spelling by the way). And I'm old enough to know that you are an imbecile. Just because you think one way, doesn't make everyone else wrong. That is arrogance and narrow-mindedness at it's best, in my opinion. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion, even stupid people. By the way, it's moron. "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 11:32 AM:

" "Amom"

If you have been a Packer fan all your life and think that Favre has brought all the fans to Green Bay....you must only be 17 or something and wasn't around for like the other 40 or so years of the Packer organization making a statement like that. If you are older than 17 you are then insane, delusional, or you better go see your doctor about your amnesia or Alzheimer's. "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 11:24 AM:

" Favre did not bring the fans to Green Bay...sure he helped but some people are forgetting about the early years. Packer fans have been there through thick and thin. A statement like Amom's is coming from a narrow-minded mooran who can't remember anything before the Favre era!!! You'll be eating a lot of crow for a stupid statement like that! I too agree that the Packers will more than likely have an average season. I do not think Favre will have a great season for the Jets. I think he will try too hard and press the ball too much and have many interceptions. With proper coaching they might be able to subdue the situation as long as they don't ask Mike Sherman for advice with Favre or bring him into the Jets organization "

" To Amom:

Brett Favre brought the fans to Green Bay? Are you living on the same planet? The Packers have had a huge following for decades, there are Packer bars in just about every state. This is a team sport, defense, offense, receivers, etc. He didn't do it alone. Get a clue. Lombardi would have sent him packing in a heartbeat. Remember him? "

packerbacker wrote on Aug 7, 2008 10:58 AM:

" My prediction, Packers will have average year. Jets will fill their stadium, sellout #4 jerseys. Brett will have a great year and shine on national TV games! Jets will soften blow of PSL seat license for new stadium for their fans and set new sales records every year Brett plays. Brett will NOT be back to GB while these liars, manipulators and egocentrists are still in charge, costing the Packers for YEARS to COME! "

packerbacker wrote on Aug 7, 2008 10:51 AM:

" There is NO question the Packer organization blew this deal. TT stubborness has cost this team plenty! Rodgers as starter is an INSULT. Marketing agreement was a BRIBE! Welcoming Brett back on Monday was a LIE and announcing it to team and Rodgers was a DOUBLE whammy to the team. McCarthy's crap about wrong mindset was a foregone conclusion. Holding up Brett from trade in division shows how PETTY TT is and their FEAR that Brett will continue Hall of Fame career! Long term impact on team~ HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in LOST revenue and a lifetime of blackeyes for this management BLUNDER! p.s. if you don't own stock or attend games MYOB! "

" How can people insist he was pushed into retirement. He's a grown man! Stand up for yourself. I'm a Packer fan always have been. Both sides are at fault but this is not the first time we've had the "will he retire, will he come back" talks. I'm happy it's over. How can a team (any team) go into the offseason with a big questions mark as to who their quarterback will be and have to wait until weeks before training camp to find out? You can't focus on your job. Brett did good things for the Packers organization but enough is enough. Football is a team sport and I'm glad somebody finally stood up for the team. "

Brett Favre made the Packers great. And they treated him very poorly. Nobody would want to stay there after what they've done to him. He didn't want to retire, they pushed him into that bad decision. Everyone has a right to stand up for themself and change their mind. To Slinger1919, I don't know who you think you are, but you DON'T know everything. "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 9:34 AM:

" Very sad things ended this way...I'm a Packer and a Favre fan but he should've stayed retired.
The Packers and Favre's legacy both took a bruising through this. Depending of Favre's play in NY his (Favre's) legacy may take more bruising. He had a great year last year...why not go out on a great note like that and eveyone can remember near or at your best. You have to remember in the Sherman years Favre didn't do to well and I do blame much of that on Sherman for giving Favre too much reign and not coaching him. I can remember Holgrem grabbing Favre by the face mask many times over the years...like it or not it was coaching. McCarthy also gave Favre some talks during the games. Something Favre never had under Sherman and it showed! Favre's play slipped a lot under the Sherman era! "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 9:26 AM:

" Too bad Favre didn't go to the Buc's. He would've had less cold weather games and at his age the cold was affecting his play unlike his earlier years. This is what showed me even though he was/is still a very good player the desire just wasn't quite there. In those terrible cold-weathered games the only thing that can keep you warm and going is desire. If people remember he sat on the sidelines on the bench all bundled up shivering like an old man. You can't come from that stage and jump out on the field and lead a team. It's just too hard to go from one extreme to other during a whole game on a drop of a hat. "

" hey slinger1919 I felt/feel the same way about the Al Davis/Marcus Allen episode. I still won't watch the raiders unless i have absolutely no other option during the football season! it's not about farve, it's not about reggie, it's not about green (although I didn't agree with that) it's about the underlying behavior of the highly paid front office of the Packers organization and their unprofessional tactics! "

down2512 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 9:01 AM:

" All you have to look at is tapes of Farve and McCarthy on the field-practice or game and you can see without hearing a word of their conversation McCarthy is Brett's adversary! After he(McCarthy) got in Thompson's ear about it and soon doubts arose followed by out right disengaging behavior and worse-INDIFFERENCE-until Farve takes himself out of football. After time to think about it he realizes Hey my career needn't end just because I won't be in GB and he decides to return to the game he loves and plays so well. the rest friends is recent history. "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 8:57 AM:

" What about Reggie White, Ahman Greene, etc. Why is it in your warped mind it was ok to trade/release them and not Favre. Those others were loyal to the team...so don't give me that loyalty garbage and quit your whining because your scared of change. That's great if your a Favre fan for he is/was a great player. But you're no Packer fan!!! " "

down2512 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 8:54 AM:

" It's not about the trade stupid! It's about the underhanded back stabbing crybaby school children on the playground antics of McCarthy, Thompson et al. Being raised in a "Packers come first on Sunday" home and following them with respect and support over several years my choice to suspend that is my own. As long as these HUSTLERS and CORPORATE THUGS have any hand in Packers affairs I'll be routing for the Chiefs, Jets, and any team that beats the Pack. "

seabiscuit wrote on Aug 7, 2008 8:51 AM:

" A sad ending between Favre and Green Bay. My son grew up watching him as the only Packers quarterback he ever knew. What a ride Brett gave us-- through the good and the bad. The fans supported him through his addiction, his father's death, and Deanna's cancer. There are many incredible moments on the field that became NFL history. In the end, I believe the organization did what was best for the team, and Brett probably knows that. Very hard to take all this, but a relief to move forward. I wish him the best in New York, but I feel he will never re-live what he had here... He will always be a Green Bay Packer to me. Rodgers is in a tough spotlight now, but he has my support and I hope we have a great season! "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 8:32 AM:

" The loyalty talk some people are whining about is a bunch of bull. Today in many professional sports it is a rarity that a player stays with the same team their whole career. Remember...we did not draft Favre, we TRADED for him. Shame on that team to trade Brett Favre...he is the only professional player with the unspoked "no trade clause" that comes with him. Believe it or not professional sports is like anything else...it's a BUSINESS. The Packers sure were unloyal when they traded Reggie White, etc. Get over it you bunch of cry babies who can't accept change. Cry all you want because it's gotten you NO WHERE! Get a L I F E ! ! ! "

slinger1919 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 8:25 AM:

" Some of you were never Packer fans if this trade alone is swaying you. You are Favre fans...and that's great but don't confuse the two. It is possible to be both which I consider myself. I wish Brett the best with the Jets. I just hope he doesn't try to do too much and throw way too many picks in the beginning. For him I wish he would've stayed retired because more than likely we will not want to be remembered for what is to come with the Jets. Too many Packer fans are living in the past. Ol' Eli Manning won more playoff games on the road than Farve did in the last 10 years. "

" To the realworld; NO ONE is bigger then the game. Ask Montana, Babe Ruth, Shak, Clemmens, Hank Aaron, Bonds, and on and on. Brett was put ABOVE the team time and time again by Sherman. When he tried running the team the last few years it was funny they kept him. I want Randy Moss or I won't play, blah, blah , blah. I wish him good luck because I am a HUGE Brett fan but tired of his act. "

There's no way any other employer would have behaved any differently. I can't stand the thought of him playing for any other team, but I am still a Packer fan. Maybe I won't watch many games this year -- but....still a Packer fan. "

You were only a Favre fan! Management did what they had to do in the best interest of the entire oganization.

This is a TEAM sport let me remind you, one player doesn't hold up a whole team. He may be a wonderful QB but if he has no one to throw to, no one to hand off to....he's nothing. So, be thankful you still have Donald Driver & the gang.

Good Luck New York, you're gettin' this QB's emotional baggage & all. HAHA! "
