Worker on new I-35W bridge injured

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A worker has suffered a minor injury on the new Interstate 35-W bridge project in Minneapolis.

The man was working on a forklift Wednesday when he was hit by a surplus bundle of one-inch PVC pipe. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and treated for what bridge officials said was likely a dislocated shoulder.

The unidentified employee works for Flatiron-Manson, the joint venture building the new bridge.

The project has had a good safety record so far. A little more than 20 incidents — mostly minor — have been recorded over the nearly yearlong project.

Crews have been working around the clock on the new bridge and are months ahead of schedule. The bridge replaces the old 35W bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River last August, killing 13 people.
