After the Favre trade: Finding out what area residents had to say

.
We asked people on the streets of La Crosse what they thought about Brett Favre being traded to the New York Jets. The answers vary, but the fact remains they all have to get used to it.

“More power to him. I hope he does well and wins the Super Bowl. If I were on the Board of Directors, I would vote to impeach Ted Thompson.” - Ted Whitney, La Crosse

“I can’t swear.” - Lynette Vermeul, La Crosse

“I think it’s a very sad day for the Packers.” - Myra Whitney, La Crosse

“I think they ought to fire Ted Thompson. It was a lousy business decision.” - Greg Johnson, La Crosse

“I had tickets to the first Packers game, but I’m not going. I’m going to burn them. If Brett’s not there, I don’t care.” - Mark Schneider, La Crosse

“I’m not really sure. Maybe we should stay with the Packers. Maybe they’ll have a good year without Brett.” - Marissa Schneider, 9, La Crosse

What happens with the Favre merchandise now?

Local stores are fielding questions about what to do with old and new Brett Favre merchandise after the announcement late Wednesday night that the formerly retired Green Bay Packers quarterback had been traded to the New York Jets.

Games People Play in Onalaska, Wis., doesn’t have any Favre merchandise on hand now, said assistant store manager Jackie Schultz, and she’s cautious about the future.

“What I would like to do is wait until he hits the field,” Schultz said.

Shoppers have been asking about the new Jets merchandise, she said, so she’ll keep an open mind.

“If he stays with the Jets and he’s their quarterback, we’ll get the merchandise,” she said.

The J.C. Penney store in Valley View Mall doesn’t know if it will carry the Favre Jets jerseys, assistant store manager Kathy Michelsen said.

“We had been very low for awhile,” Michelsen said of the Packers Favre jerseys, “but we sold out even prior to the announcement.”

Real Packer fans understand Before Brett Favre, during Brett Favre and now Jet Favre! Long after TT and spindoctors are GONE, Brett Favre's place in Packers history will ALWAYS BE #1! "

" Further, I hope Jet-Favre gets to the Super Bowl and so do the GB PACKERS and I will root for my beloved Packers to win IN PERSON in TAMPA> for all you loons out there~ I used the HOPE. The 3,000 #4 Jets jerseys sold per DAY could have been GB Packers #4 special GOLD jersey that Brett would have worn on opening day AS THE STARTER v Vikes and at Halftime when retire his #4 and HE IS STILL WEARING IT, probably sold 1,000,000 or more and the Pack gets a piece of each, BUT NO... THEY CRAPPED ON THE LEGEND AND FANS AND TEAM'S LONG TERM FINANCES because TT and MM's EGOS! "

Regardless of how it all shakes out~ the PACKERS have LOST MILLIONS DOLLARS over the long term by disrespecting their fans and the legend Brett Favre. Long after the current 2 boobs are fired ~ BRETT FAVRE will ALWAYS remain the GREATEST PLAYER IN PACKERS HISTORY! "

" The best part of this drama is all the grown men that suddenly act like 2nd graders over the trade (i.e. packerbacker, mark schnieder, et.al.) I remember 13 years ago these were that same guys yelling about how bad Farve sucked and how packers management let Ty Detmer go who was "clearly" a superior quarterback. The truth is all that Brett Farve did for the organization he would have done for any other team that paid him. I think the logical thing to do before going apoplectic will be to see how the season plays out, and reserve judgment based on facts and not "bromance" emotions for the ex-quarterback. "

" For the retailers that don't have the Favre jerseys and are not sure about weather to carry them. Think about the fact that the Jets webstore crashed due to the overwhelming demand for his jersey. Your goal is to sell and you are missing the boat on this. You should reconsider your career choice if you can't figure out the simple supply and demand concept. Go Favre, hope the pack lose every game. Viking fan "

Also I did'nt see much exitement from him during his press conference with jets. He looked like what the heck did I just do! I'm glad he's he gone. But for those people who are going to burn or get rid of their tickets you may want to let me know, i'm always in the market. "

He has jerked this team around the past three years. TT has a business to run. We need to think of the next 10-15 years. To listen to some of you Greenbay might as well fold the franchise up. MY GOD. An to blast Rodgers is idiotic. Give the guy a chance. We have young men dying for this country everyday and you people are weeping because Favre is playing for the Jets. Good Gosh. "

As for Mark Schneider- YOU RUN A PACKER BAR!! Who is going to want to spend any time at your establishment if you're burning tickets and you claim to not care? He was an employee, just like many of us, who have to accept things in our jobs that we don't like or quit. Brett decided to quit in March. The Packers still had him under contract, though. They still owned him. As such, TT was well within his rights to tell Brett where he could and could not play when he decided to 'un-quit', not because of a HUGE EGO but because it's business. "

I agree with you completely. I find nothing to support in the Packer organization now. "

" I say fire the Mayor of La Crosse first. His ambulance service is a dead issue with the people.
He's spending our tax dollars spinning his wheels on this issue. I think the city has more important issues to work on mayor.

Then call Ted Thompson in the office of the people and tell him his services are no longer needed, and it's only business. "

" If this was truly a "business decision" as Ted Thompson has said over and over again, then they would have done whatever they could to keep Favre. At the end of the day when all is said and done, Favre made the team better by being on it. And after all, if the business is winning football games, they had a better chance with Favre than without him. Thompson needs to be fired. It's only business after all. "

" I have an interesting view about this whole thing purely from a roster standpoint. Back in mid-March after Favre retired everyone was ready to back Rodgers and move forward without Favre. Now nearing mid-August we are at the same point roster wise and we are also getting an additional draft pick? I dont see the problem with the whole thing other than it could have been handled a little better. A true fan cheers for the name on the front of the jersey and not the name on the back. GO PACK! "

" Favre said it himself, that he is no traitor for going to the Jets, that it is business. Well, it's business for the Packers too and it should be a wake up call for Packer fans living in fantasyland--football is a business.

Anybody who in no longer a Packer fan over Favre leaving probably never was much of a fan. Remember Packer great Paul Hornung? Well the Packers did not protect him in the expansion draft and New Orleans picked him. Football is a business, but it also is a game and entertainment. Put it in its perspective as such--there are more important things in life. "

" He decided he would miss the game, and afterall he is the best, but the Packers said they had no room for him, what does that mean, you are too old, your fired? I can understand the let down, in which case they should have released him instead of the trade. He should be able to play where he really wants to. He was a very loyal guy to G B, he really liked it there, the people etc. He said last night, this is a business, and must go on. I will certainly follow him, I don't like the way it was handled. The Packer reputation is now tarnished for me. "

" Look at his eyes in this picture. He looks like he wants to say "What have I done?" I'll say it, What have you done Brett? He is going to wish he'd stayed retired and rode his lawn mower around Kiln, MS. At least his season won't be as long bcz there is no way the Jets are going to make it to the playoffs. He will also find out how good Wisconsin Fans are as the NY fans will not be as charitable when he throws one of his INTs regardless of how many touchdowns he throws per game. "

I was so happy he was retired, no more of 'that' name, now this happens.

I can only hope his name fades from this area. "
