Kenosha mother sentenced after son, 3, fatally shoots self

.
KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — A Kenosha mother whose 3-year-old son died after accidentally shooting himself has been sentenced to 18 months probation.

Thirty-four-year-old Jessica Lesnick had pleaded guilty to being a party to the crime of leaving a loaded firearm near a child. She was sentenced Wednesday.
Kenosha County Circuit Judge Barbara Kluka says the death of Joshua Lesnick was already a "tremendous burden and punishment." But she says the mother still has to be held accountable.

Jessica Lesnick's husband was sentenced in June to one year of probation. Michael Lesnick is a former North Chicago police officer and licensed firearms instructor.

Jessica Lesnick told the judge she didn't bring the gun into her home, but tearfully acknowledged she was the adult in the house at the time.

" This is such a sad story. But don't let this family get to you. They have been in trouble with the law since 04. I sure hope child serves took the other child away in this family. They don't deserve to have that child. "

" That is so sad!

I'm sorry, but if you're a licensed firearms instructor, wouldn't you be taught to not carry the gun loaded; secondly, wouldn't you be trained on how to properly store firearms?

My heart breaks for this little boy...who probably thought it was a toy. "

" This is tragic, but why did the mother get more time than the father? He is the "licensed firearms instructor," why didn't HE store it properly. Who's gun was it and why was it someplace that a three-year old could get hold of it? Did the mother even know how to handle it. My heart goes out to them for losing a child. "

" Tragic, yet SO preventable. This is the story that gives gun owners a bad name. On top of that it was an instructional police officers kid.

I choke up any time I hear of a childs death, so innocent. "
