WE SAY: Denis Downey, Tribune sportswriter, on New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre.

Brett Favre could be in for a rude awakening from the fans and the media during his stint with the New York Jets.

Packers fans are among the NFL’s most passionate. Jets fans among the most rabid — and I don’t mean that in necessarily a good way.

Those same Jets fans that are gushing about acquiring Favre today, might also be burning him in effigy if things don’t go well during the season. They are known to turn on their team as often as NASCAR drivers turn left.

The same can be said of the New York media. Favre is being portrayed as the Jets savior right now. But, if the Jets fail to fly high, No. 4 can also expect to replace Alex Rodriguez as the favor target of the Big Apple’s tabloids once the Yankees’ season is done.

Personally, I hope Favre finds success — but not too much success — with the Jets, for his legacy and his sanity.
