WE SAY: Denis Downey, Tribune sportswriter, on New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre.

.
Brett Favre could be in for a rude awakening from the fans and the media during his stint with the New York Jets.

Packers fans are among the NFL’s most passionate. Jets fans among the most rabid — and I don’t mean that in necessarily a good way.
Those same Jets fans that are gushing about acquiring Favre today, might also be burning him in effigy if things don’t go well during the season. They are known to turn on their team as often as NASCAR drivers turn left.

The same can be said of the New York media. Favre is being portrayed as the Jets savior right now. But, if the Jets fail to fly high, No. 4 can also expect to replace Alex Rodriguez as the favor target of the Big Apple’s tabloids once the Yankees’ season is done.

Personally, I hope Favre finds success — but not too much success — with the Jets, for his legacy and his sanity.

" I also have become a two team fan this year.

I believe Brett was forced out of here by Ted Thompson, and had no choice to leave the Packers.

Brett will always be a Packer, no matter what team he landed on. He gave us many years of great football and deserved so much more then the Green Bay HQ gave him.

I only hope that he realizes that it's a split town. Not everybody wanted to see him go, and there's a big black cloud hanging over Lambeau Field now.

I wish him the best of luck in NY.

I don't believe that Rogers is our "go to guy" and when/if he fails, I hope he takes Ted Thompson right down with him. As for McCarthy...I never trusted him either.

Sad day indeed...

GO BRETT GO !! "

" Hey Vikesfan,

Pot calling the kettle black...huh, a Vikes fan now rooting for Favre?!? Bet you weren't rooting for him last season. "

" Wow - looks like the pot calling the kettle black!?!? The Packers forced Brett to make a decision earlier than he wanted to and now that he's gone look at all the crap that people are saying - especially the "die-hard" fans that have now turned against Brett - Go Brett!! Go Vikes!! "

" Love your attitude let it be said. I hope the Jets have much success with Favre on their team. Wonder what "Doug" thinks about this? Remember the "king of Queens"? always in a Jets shirt? What was the Jets record last season? I think it will be better this year and I pray their offensive line does great work in protecting their qb. "

" I hope he has a good year and doesn't get hurt behind the "rebuilt offensive line" so next year he can go golfing when he wants. My guess is he will get whacked early in the season and blow out a knee, elbow, or shoulder. The Jets are awful, and it was not all Chad Pennington's fault. Adding Favre will not make them a good team or a well coached one. In fact, maybe we can sign Pennington as a backup! "

" Jets just acquired a new fan, GO JETS!

I will still root for the Pack, but continue to hate mgmnt; have since Ted moved in.

I have a solid two teams to watch this year. "
