It’s time for the next panel of Community Columnists to be selected. If you’re interested in writing four or five columns during the next 12 months, here’s how you can apply:
Send me some writing samples, a letter explaining why you want to be a Community Columnist and a list of possible column topics.
You can e-mail this to rmial@lacrossetribune.com, or mail it to Community Columnists, La Crosse Tribune, 401 N. Third St.,
La Crosse, WI 54601.
There usually are between 12 and 16 columnists picked every year. I’m looking mainly at writing style. What you write about is up to you.
Topics are all over the board. Some columnists write about politics from one perspective or the other. But most of the topics are about aspects of life that don’t fit neatly into a “Red State/Blue State” political model.
One recent column had to do with being thankful. Another discussed the need for our communities to become more bicycle-friendly — for environment, health and other reasons.
One columnist who also is a local musician, wrote about the vibrant local music scene that exists in the La Crosse area. We don’t always recognize what a positive thing that is.
Topics can be heavy, silly or everywhere in between.
The columns run on the page opposite the Opinion page on Sunday, at a length of about 530 words. If you’re selected as a columnist, you will have a deadline at noon on Tuesday before the Sunday of publication.
So, think about it. If you’re interested, send me the material I need to make a decision. If you have any questions, drop me an e-mail or give me a call.
It’s a good way to get your 15 minutes of fame — four or five times during the coming year.
