Alma D. Hanson
WEST SALEM, Wis. Alma D. Hanson, 87, of West Salem passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at her home.
She was born June 11, 1921, in Estella, Wis., to Johannes and Laura (Kohls) Goltz. On Feb. 16, 1946, she married Kenneth Hanson in Cornell, Wis., and he preceded her in death May 19, 1994.
Alma was an avid sports fan with a lifelong affection for her beloved Cubs and Packers, and enjoyed watching a game whenever she could, no matter what was going on. One of her grandchildren lovingly gave her the nickname “Grandma Elmo,” which her family continued to call her. “Grandma Elmo” loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever she could. She was a very loving and caring person who just enjoyed being with them and always looked forward to spending time with them. Alma was also looking forward to spending time with her new kitten, Molly. In her younger years, Alma was a wonderful seamstress, making many of the children’s clothes as they were growing up. She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed crafting and collecting beanie babies, which she passed down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for any special occasion. Alma worked at Sears for 17 years and was the customer service manager as well as the credit department manager during her time there. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem, where she taught Sunday School Bethel Series and was an active member of Martha Circle for many years. Alma possessed a quick, often sarcastic wit. No matter how tough things got, “Grandma Elmo” was always a loving, caring and giving person.
Survivors include four children, Janna Stamstad of Greybull, Wyo., Debra (Ryan) Lee of Green Bay, Wis., David (Dona) Hanson of Mandan, N.D., and Michael (Marianne) Hanson of De Soto, Wis.;
10 grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, and Kenalyn Stamstad, Elizabeth (Ryan) Ellis and Andrew Lee, Erik (Kimberly) Hanson and Megan Hanson, Jeremy (Deb) Kane, and Melissa (Jim) Klonecki and Kristina (Andy) Olson; 11 great-grandchildren, Gabriel Hanson, Taryn Radue, Emily and Mariah Pedretti, Caden Kane and Tyler Kane, Hannah, Kody and Gracie Klonecki and Jordan and Jamison Jungen; one brother, Wilfred (Johanna) Goltz of Cornell, Wis.; two sisters, Elaine Phelps of Cornell, Wis. and Susan Goltz of Elk Mound, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Joyce Millard of West Salem, Jeanette Totten of Phoenix, Ariz., and Evelyn (Harold) Capaul of Cornell, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband of 48 years, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Orville (Helen), Harvey (Loretta) and John Goltz; a sister, Eleanor Goltz; and three brothers-in-law, Gerald Phelps, Harlan Millard and Roger Totten.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem. The Revs. J. David Bersagel and Martha J. Hampton will officiate. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery. Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
The family would like to thank the staff at Swifthaven Assisted Living in La Crosse for the compassionate care that they gave to Alma while she lived there.
Adeline C. Larkin
TOMAH, Wis. Adeline C. Larkin, 93, of Tomah passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008.
She was born Dec. 11, 1914, to Edward and Anna (Schram) Haumschild. Addie grew up in La Crosse and attended St. Joseph’s Cathedral Grade School and was a member of the first four-year, graduating class from Aquinas High School in 1932.
On June 7, 1937, she was united in marriage to Jack H. Larkin at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in La Crosse. They moved to Tomah in 1944, where they owned and operated Larkin’s Pontiac-Cadillac-GMC dealership. Jack preceded her in death in 2001. Addie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tomah and belonged to St. Joan’s Guild.
Addie is survived by her four children, sons, Terry (Sharon) Larkin and Tim (Mary) Larkin, both of Tomah, daughters, Linda (John) Massa of La Crosse and Paula (Larry) Berry of Tomah; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Valiquette and Mary Louise Sciborski, both of La Crosse; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents; one sister, Cathryn Turner; and one brother, Eugene Haumschild.
According to Addie’s wishes, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Tomah.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, The Area Community Theatre (ACT) or the Aquinas Foundation.

Stanley Norman Miller
MONAGHAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. Stanley Norman Miller, Ed.D. of Monaghan Township died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at his home.
A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was Professor Emeritus of Penn State University, Harrisburg. A 1946 graduate of Central High School in La Crosse, he received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and doctorate from the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. Previously, he was the director of the Bureau of General and Academic Education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education and department head of the education programs, Provost and Dean for Penn State, Harrisburg. He founded and headed the new Division of Behavioral Science and Education for Penn State. Stanley and his wife, Mimi, participated in the Friends of Peace Church, where he served several terms as president and church historian. He was a volunteer genealogist/researcher at the Cumberland County Historical Society at the Hamilton Library and published articles in the “Civil War Times” and high school text books related to the Bicentennial. He was a member of the Civil War Roundtable.
He was born March 1, 1929, in La Crosse to the late Lewis William and Ida Augusta (Foehser) Miller. He was the widower of Miriam A. Mac Lachlan Miller.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky Lee of New Cumberland, Pa.; son, Stephen L. Miller and his wife Cindy of Dillsburg, Pa.; and grandson Ryan A. Miller.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until Memorial Services at 11 a.m. Friday at Historical Peace Church, Camp Hill, Pa. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, adjacent to the church.

Aletta Marie Pendleton
VIROQUA, Wis. Aletta Marie Pendleton, 44, of Viroqua died Sunday morning, Aug. 10, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 12, 1963, in Viroqua to Donald and Grace (Head) Nedland. She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1981 and recently graduated with honors from the electronics program at Western Technical College in La Crosse. Aletta loved animals, especially horses. She also enjoyed music and her years as a Girl Scout Leader.
Aletta is survived by a daughter, Katelyn Grace Pendleton of Viroqua; a son, Nathan Pendleton of Viroqua; sister, Maurine Fritz of Viroqua; two brothers, Jim (Dawn) Nedland of Westby, Wis., and
Ed (Abi) Nedland of Westby; nephews, Chris Fritz of La Crosse and Eddie Nedland of Westby; nieces, Amber (Todd) Jolly of Onalaska, Wis., Aimee Nedland of Westby and Susan (John) Bryant of Holmen, Wis.; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins in Louisiana, Texas and Florida; and special friends, Al and Kim Larson of Westby and Kathy Skaaland of Viroqua.
A visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua. This will be a time to share memories and thoughts.

Ivan Pilcher
LA CRESCENT, Minn. Ivan Pilcher, 76, of La Crescent died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008.
He was born Nov. 16, 1931, in Adair County, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Ivan worked at Penford Products for 40 years, where for several years he served as president of the American Federation of Grain Millers, Local 100. He retired to La Crescent in 1993. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and a volunteer at La Crescent Center for Senior Meals.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Bonnie; a stepdaughter, Kae Creech and her husband Tim and son Sam Petersen; two sisters, Joy and Lila; three brothers, Lowell, Donald and Kenneth; one son, Gary; four daughters, Brenda, Dianna, Terry and Cindy; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers; two sisters; and two grandsons, Josh Pilcher and Luke Petersen.
Gramps was a champion of children and a kid at heart. He was a well-known supporter of Sam and Luke Petersen’s soccer teams, ringing his cowbell with every goal scored. He will be remembered for his everlasting kind heart and sense of fun.
In accord with Ivan’s wishes there will be no services. There will be a celebration of Ivan’s life at his home on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m.
