What problem would La Crosse ambulance proposal solve?

.
It seems pretty clear that most people who are commenting about the city of

La Crosse’s desire to get in
the ambulance business are against it.

One letter (that will be published later this week or early next week) had this to say about La Crosse Mayor Mark Johnsrud, a major proponent of the ambulance plan: “If he is not hearing the negativism,

he is not getting out to talk

to the general public. The general public is much against

this proposal. If he doesn’t back away from this proposal, he will hear from them when we need to vote for a new mayor.”

The most recent suggestion by the city is to buy two ambulances and enter into the ambulance market, with one ambulance in service by 2010. Twelve firefighters would be trained as paramedics to staff the ambulance. The plan would call for the creation of a new Joint Emergency Medical Service Commission to oversee the system.

In addition, the city would seek to have one paramedic on every first responder call in the city. Is this necessary? Would the introduction of more paramedics be good for the public because it would upgrade the service? Or would it be worse because more paramedics would not have the number of calls needed to keep up their skills?

We haven’t heard suggestions that the existing private service, Tri-State Ambulance (owned by Gundersen Lutheran) is doing a bad job. Is there something we don’t know? What problem would we be fixing if we had the addition of the city into the now-private ambulance business in La Crosse?

The best comment we heard was made by Franciscan Skemp CEO Dr. Robert Nesse at a public meeting Aug. 6 at the University of Wisconsin-

La Crosse. Nesse said he does not have enough information to know whether the city’s plan is a good idea. Specifically,

he wants to know detailed information about Tri-State response time, plus a sense of how many paramedics would be ideal for La Crosse.

He suggested that the medical service commission be

set up now — and given the task of getting the information needed to make a decision. That makes sense. Without specific information it’s impossible to make an informed decision.

If there are problems with the existing private service, we need to know about them. If the existing service is excellent and problem-free, we need to know that, too.

Unless there are real problems that need to be solved, the city should stay out of

the ambulance business — period.

" Mayor mark listens too much to wackos like Liveable Neighborhoods, Ristow, Chip DeNure, Brain Smith, Mike Welch, Dorothy the roundabout queen, alcohol commission, Kondracki, Urban Vultures and socialists that think government is the answer! I blame Janet Reno for Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elian Gonzales and 9/11~ she was the WORST AG in History! "

" lets see, I pay my taxes to pay for an ambulance service that the city wants to run.

I'm now going to pay for a service that i may never need. But of course if I do need it, I am billed for the service that I'm already going to be paying for.

The city of lacrosse can't manage to plow my street for 8 to 12 hours after a 14 inch snow. how are you going to manage to get the ambulance service to my house.

you can't manage to slow the traffic down on my street, most driving 20 over in a residental area.

last thing we need is city government making money on the tax payers

no jonsrud, go back to selling guns, you got no business in that office. "

" And re enuff's comment re letters to the editor: We used to be able to comment on letters to the editor, but the responses were often so vile and personal and in some cases threatening that the Tribune stopped doing it The comments were so nasty that they actually inhibited "free speech." If you want to comment on a letter, how about writing one? If it is coherent, free from name calling and personal attacks, maybe the Trib will publish it! "

" My councilman told me that the ambulance idea was dead in the water. The mayor, it seems to me, is like a pit bull - once he bites on to something he won't let it go until he is beaten senseless. This ambulance idea is all his. No one knows where it came from, why we need it, or what the outcome is supposed to be. The council is not for it, but it has to be on the agenda cuz the mayor wants it. "

So what is the next name you will be using to blog with, oh wait, it only takes two or three comments on this site to figure you out. Kinda like a game. OK, lets start. "

" Also the CPA who questioned both sides at last Wednesday Meeting. He also is partner in a business that does Ambulance billing, and then add to that he owns another collection/bad debt business. How could that be more custom made for need? He has run some numbers already. It does not look good. Hopefully he will sign on to talk tonight at Council. Hopefully! Who would know there is no AGENDA on the City Web!!!!! Nobody has a leash, of any kind, attached to this guys neck. Other than the block of tax burden that is hauling all of us local taxpayers down that we share with him.
See Ya!
If you cannot understand and partake in this one, you deserve what this self serving bunch is going to serve up to you. "

" Ranters, obstructionists, remedial, and lazy asses! Which one are you? For all of you that are sick and tired of 'it'. There is a movement that will be seeking your signature, and more importantly help. Simply 'volunteer', get your butt out of the recliner 'help'. No more ranting, no more threatening, 'help'. The problem? Talk is cheap, and too widely illustrated. A referendum is on your way. But so is a majority vote of the Council. Put your big talk into action. Call the people that surface with it. It will not be me, so call and 'volunteer'. So Moderate, Tower, etc, etc, etc let's see what you are made of. It doesn't get any more egregious and lopsided than this City business venture. I will not be around anymore, so you can't use me as an excuse. "

" This will not sucessfully whoosh by us this time, even if they vote for it at Council. Guaranteed! Prepare to get out of your recliners. "

" At the last Wednesday public Meeting. You remember the one? Where the City and it's minions showed their power point programs, and everybody else got 2 minutes. That one! Well, there was a very experienced well seasoned CPA there. Who really in earnest questioned both sides to be honest. Who also happens to be a partner in another business that does Ambulance Service billing. Who also also has another business where he collects bad debts. Patience, this man has run some numbers and it does not look good for Johnsrud and his new proposed venture. Stayed tuned, I am sure he will even bring more to the forefront/truth of this issue. Then maybe Doyle, Mayor, and the Chief will have two minutes to respond. "

" Hey Ron Violette! who was "Commander in Chief" when we were attacked opn 9/11 dspite his having all kinds of evidence that something was up? George Bush, that's who and never forget it! You right wingers all belly-ached when Clinton launched cruise missiles in an attempt to kill bin Laden! Hypocrites! "

US Citizen wrote on Aug 14, 2008 10:50 AM:

" Where are the answers?? Every time this idea comes up the same questions get asked and no one from the city ever answers them! Tri State does an excellant job in this city. That is not the problem. The Fire Dept needs to make money to off-set the "over-the-top" budget and want to take over the ambulance business to make money. Where does it stop? How many private businesses will the govt take over before it's happy? When will they take over your job? "

LAX wrote on Aug 14, 2008 10:48 AM:

" This whole idea is nuts and if you check into (i.e. follow the money) I'll bet somebody with connections to City Hall stands to make a lot of money. BTW -- Ron Violette (and Krusty the Klown) is a doofus, too! What a bunch of garbage! "

" After Bozo's last post lets see if I can't stir the pot some more. Does ANYONE ( that would be you Mr./Mrs. La Crosse Tribune editorial staff) know why comments are NOT allowed on the Tribune site to Letters to the Editor, but ARE allowed on the "sister" paper web sites like the Holmen Courier, Onalaska Community Life, Houston County News, et al.?

Just curious. "

random annoying bozo wrote on Aug 14, 2008 8:39 AM:

" Daily Reader, you ask why does the Trib accept letters from certain individuals? well it could be that thing we call 'the First Amendment'. you know, that thing most 'news' media outlets hide behind, like when they quote 'unnamed' sources. the Trib 'censors' and 'filters' enough 'news' and 'opinions' already. and Trib, if you would open up ALL areas for feedback, it wouldn't be necessary to post about certain things where they have no relevance. such as what i'm doing now wit this post. "

random annoying bozo wrote on Aug 14, 2008 8:03 AM:

" and if as the Mayor stated this wouldn't add any more personel to the Fire Dept. isn't that somewhat of an admission that the Fire Dept MAY be over staffed? or at least somewhat top heavy? remember, the firefighters union did endorse the Mayor 3+ years ago. i may be way off base, but to get the truth you need to ask ALL the questions. and not just listen to the 'talking points' thrown out by the City. "

Krusty wrote on Aug 14, 2008 7:53 AM:

" It comes down to the fact that our mayor is a doofus that thinks he can get away with another scam. Every time I drive by the skywalk at the civic center that he blew over a million on I start cursing, johnsrud should have been recalled for that alone. On another point, what's wrong with the letter from Ron Violette? It seems pretty accurate to me. "

random annoying bozo wrote on Aug 14, 2008 7:51 AM:

" one question i have yet heard to be asked is, if the City has a 'paramedic on every call', does that pave the way for the City to start charging for calls they otherwise do not charge for now? if you get an answer to that question, you may find the answer to why the City wants an ambulance and paramedics. when you hear government officials talking about 'revenue' and 'revenue streams', that's code for 'we're looking at ways to bleed even more money out of their comnstituents, "

DailyReader wrote on Aug 14, 2008 7:28 AM:

" The City "Leaders" are little children who want a new toy. And why does the Tribune still accept letters from Ron Viollette? "
