Houston County Fair: Celebrating 150 years of family fun

.
Festival: The Houston County Fair is held each August. It started Wednesday and ends Sunday. This year marks its 150th year.

Location: The fairgrounds are located in Caledonia, Minn.

Hours: Events start at 9 a.m. today with the 4-H Dairy Show in the Krech Arena and will continue into the evening hours when Studebaker 7 takes the stage at 8 p.m. in the Big Tent.

Cost: Admission to the fair is free, but $5 commemorative sesquicentennial buttons are available for purchase. A portion of button sale proceeds will be donated to area flood victims.

Where are the bathrooms? Flush toilets for “Bulls” and “Heifers” are located near the Commercial Buildings, while the portable kind are located throughout the grounds.

Weather or Not: Today, Saturday and Sunday should be perfect days to head out to the fair. The National Weather Ser-vice forecasts high temperatures in the low 80s with sunny skies.

Where the Kids Are: Today is Kids Day, and there are loads of activities and entertainment planned from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for kids of all ages. Sure to be popular is a Guitar Hero tournament that gets started at 10:30 a.m.

Cool Creation: Katie Windschitl took an old rocking horse she and her sisters rode and turned it into a carousel horse using an old floor lamp stand, some tools and paint. Windschitl, a member of the Hokah Chiefs, earned a blue award and champion for home environment, for her efforts.

Smash and crash: There will be lots of dents made at 1 p.m. Sunday during the Stan Betz Memorial Demo Derby. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12.

Totally Minnesota: The best hotdish contest is at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Office Building. Dishes will be judged on taste, appearance and originality.

Quick Kids: Youngsters will compete in the Diaper Derby at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Big Tent. There are three age categories: Birth to 12 months, 12 to 15 months and 15 to 24 months.

Most exotic animal: A red kangaroo exhibited by the Hemker Park & Zoo.

Dinner anyone? The family meal deal includes six slices of pepperoni or sausage pizza and four beverages for $13.50 at the 4-H Food Stand. You just have to wait 20 minutes for your grub.

Cool down: Get a shake from The Udder Place. The 16-ounce size is $3 and comes in vanilla, chocolate, black raspberry, strawberry or caramel.

Ready to farm: Two-year-old twins Eli and Owen Staggemeyer wore their John Deere attire to the fair. The boys like to spend time on the farm of their grandparents, Tim and Pam Schieber of Caledonia. Their mother, Audrey, said it’s possible Eli and Owen will show dairy calves when they are old enough, but it will all depend on whether the family is still farming.

Keeping things tidy: Sheep are easier to keep than beef

cattle, said Jack Miller, 12, of the Mayville Blue Ribbon Strivers. With sheep, you just rake the chips out of the aisle, feed and water them, he said. “You have to make sure the manure is cleaned out of the cows’ pens all the time.”
