Dubbed “Flood Daze,” the event will start with an 11 a.m. worship service, followed by food, games, ice cream and music.
There will also be an apple race in the Kickapoo River, which overran its banks Aug. 20, 2007, and again on June 9 of this year, displacing dozens of people in the town of 625.
Rev. Pam Lojewski, pastor of Luther Memorial Church, said the last year was hard on the town. Many have been living with relatives or in apartments elsewhere while repairing their homes — or just waiting for word on whether they will qualify for federal hazard mitigation buyouts.
Others who stayed behind are living on virtual islands, surrounded by vacant, flood-damaged houses.
“It’s kind of a depressing place to live right now,” Lojewski said. “I hope (the event) will help people.”
