Jean M. Hengel
Jean M. Hengel, 73, of La Crosse passed away on Friday, Aug. 15, at Hillview Healthcare Center La Crosse. She was born in La Crosse on April 2, 1935, to Edward and Olga (Bakken) Hilmoe. She married Raymond Hengel at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse on July 14, 1956.
In addition to her husband Ray of La Crosse, she is survived by four daughters, Susan (Dennis) George, Judy Hengel, Nancy (Jim) Keller, all of La Crosse, and Teresa (Blaine) Raymer of Woodbury, Minn.; one son, Jeffrey Hengel of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Liz, Mary, Evan, Nate, Shawn, Jon and Matt and one great-granddaughter, Taryn; and one sister, Jeri (Gordy) Johnson of Westby, Wis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded by one son, Mark.
Jean was a nurturing mother, a devoted wife and a true friend. She taught us life by example.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Mary Mother of The Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Douglas Robertson will officiate. Entombment will follow in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call on the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, and again from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be donated in Jean’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association and to Mary Mother of the Church Parish. James L. Davis
WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — James L. Davis was the beloved husband of Michelle (Mosner) Davis. He was the son of Leola (Josef Vosmek) Jacobson of La Crescent, Minn., and Marvin (Edna) Davis of La Crosse. He was the brother of Korri (Kim) Davis of Holmen, Wis., Kurt (Lisa) Davis of La Crescent, Shannon (Todd) McKeeth of New Ulm, Minn., and Jodi (Jamie) Plomedahl of La Crosse.
James was a software engineer with Cray, Inc., St. Paul, Minn.
He is survived by a mother and father-in-law, Jeff (Olga) Mosner of St. Paul; a brother-in-law, Charles Mosner; and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at Johnson Peterson Funeral Home, 2130 Second St., White Bear Lake. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. There will be a private family burial.
Betty L. Martalock
HILLSBORO, Wis. — Betty L. Martalock, 76 years, of Hillsboro passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Hess Memorial Hospital in Mauston, Wis.
She was born on Jan. 7, 1932, to Cyril “Red” and Helen (Brandon) Marvin in Hillsboro. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1950. Betty was united in marriage to Norman Martalock on Aug. 7, 1954, in Hillsboro. They farmed at South Ridge, rural Kendall, Wis., for seven years, lived at Spring Green for 10 years and moved to Hillsboro in 1971. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2004.
Betty worked for MECCA Sportswear in Hillsboro, Ontario, Kendall and Tomah, all in Wisconsin, and as a seamstress in the banner department. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.
Survivors include four daughters, Rebecca (David) Krueger of Pittsburgh, Barbara (Ralph) Buehler of Harrisburg, Pa., Susan Martalock of Middleton, Wis., and Rachel Martalock of Middleton; four grandchildren, Carrie, Sarah, Stuart and Jessica; a brother-in-law, Alfred Wilson of Iowa and his children, Cindy, Tim, Tony and Mike; a sister-in-law, Joyce Graewin of Norwalk, Wis., and her sons, Ronald and Allen. In addition to her husband, Norman, she was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Grace (Heding) Marvin; and sister, Mary Lou Wilson.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, with the Rev. Conrad Prell officiating. Beth Schoenfeld
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Beth Schoenfeld, 68, of Overland Park passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Atonement Lutheran Church, at 11 a.m. (luncheon to follow).
Beth was born Nov. 1, 1939, in La Crosse where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Richard Schoenfeld, in 1960. She was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, a loving wife, a giving mother, and a world-class grandma. She will be sorely missed, but we are comforted that she is with her Lord.
She is survived by Richard, her husband of 48 years; their children, Matt and Cynthia Schoenfeld, and Julie and Roger Johnson; and grandchildren, Will and Mattie Schoenfeld, and Owen and Bart Johnson.

Concetta ‘Connie’ Gunther
DAKOTA, Minn. — Memorial services for Concetta Gunther, 39, of Dakota, will be Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Ho-Chunk Nation, 724 Main St., La Crosse. There will be a ceremony, food, refreshments and music.
Connie, who died Thursday, July 10, 2008, was born May 26, 1969, in Bethel, Alaska, to Michael and Mary Sheppard. She graduated from a technical college in Juneau, Alaska, in 1996.
While growing up in Alaska, Connie worked in a local convenience store and on the fishing boats during the summer. She loved the mountains and beauty of her home state. She was quick to smile and had an unforgettable laugh. She knew how to have fun and make a house a home. She loved those around her deeply. She was a foster mother for a few years before she moved to Wisconsin.
She is survived by her son, Stanley L. Gunther; stepchildren, Ed Jr., Gina, Amy and Sarah; a niece, Michelle Sheppard in Wisconsin, and many nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved, in Alaska. Although Connie may have left the state of Alaska, she never left the hearts of her parents, Michael and Mary Sheppard; brother, Michael “Junior” Sheppard; and sisters, Lizzie, Marilynn and Matilda. She remains in the heart of her special friend, Mike O’Reilly. She will be missed dearly.
Connie was preceded in death by a sister, Alexandra; husband, Edward Gunther Sr. (buried at Flat Top Mountain, Anchorage, Alaska); and grandparents, Tommy and Lizzie Sheppard.
Funeral services were held in Mountain Village, Alaska.
Robert Flugstad
IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. — Robert “Bob” Flugstad of Iron Mountain died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 9, 1951, in La Crosse, the son of the late Margaret (Molzahn) and Grant Flugstad.
He married Gail Jerks on Sept. 22, 2001, at First Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 2005.
Bob is survived by his aunt, Alice Lenser of La Crosse; Gail’s four children and families; a longtime friend, Gary Weber and his family of Laurium, Mich.; and many cousins and their families of the La Crosse area.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at First Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain.

INDEPENDENCE, Wis. — Verna Ann Kampa, 89, of Independence died unexpectedly Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Independence. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
