Referendum remains in limbo; school board to meet again Monday

.
The La Crosse School Board will meet next week for the third straight Monday after it again was unable to reach a consensus on attempting a November referendum.

“We need to get focused and this is the time,” President Christine Clair said at the board’s regular meeting Monday. “We need to make the decision whether or not we are going out to referendum.”
The special meeting will focus on the district’s needs and the potential fall referendum.

Board members could decide what — if any — measure will be on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Board member Deb Suchla also requested the board talk about possible school closures and using some of the district’s $33 million fund balance to offset repairs and renovations.

“... We need to look at the big picture, and we need to look to the future,” Clair said.

Clerk Mary Larson said she would like to see the same referendum that failed in April but without the proposed new school.

Safety and boilers, she said, would garner public support.

Board member Neil Duresky didn’t want to wait until a November referendum to fix safety and security issues. He wants to tap into the fund balance, but his resolution Monday failed to draw enough board support.

The board needs to have a potential referendum question drafted 45 days before the general election, which means they must decide by Sept. 20, Clair said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we have one (another board meeting) later next week,” she said.

" I believe what the school board says. The 33 million is indeed being held in reserve for emergencies ... emergency pay increases, emergency increases in health care benefits, emergency increase in retirement benefits. They can't risk spending any of that on repair and renovations, thats what tax increases are for. "

" I think we need a referendum to impeach all on the La Crosse School Board that support stealing more money from the tax payers!! We had a referendum and the taxpayers and voters SAID NO what part of NO you MORONs dont understand!! "

    " Well said "AnonWriter".
Maybe it's time the "BIG" benefit holders anty up a portion of their retirement to cover maintenance costs.
No, means, no on past referendums.
    Couldn't agree more!!!! "

" Spend 20 million today on maintaining the schools we have. The lack of repair on our schools came on the back of this $33 million in reserve, shame on you school board. In the grand scheme of things the board can find $95,000 a year in that bloated budget I.E. an administration position. "

" The Lacrosse school systems finacials have been mis-managed for years. Their concern is to maintain the bloated staffing and benefits in lieu of maintaining the infrastructure. The enrollment is declining, yet they want to keep the same number of buildings and staffing. They mislead the public annually, and the public's apathy allows this to go on. Expect no improvements at this time. When the majority of the city is off limits to the good people because it is a drug dominated, gang dominated slum, the concered people will move out en-mass as so many have allready done and eventually their will be very little money left for the schools so the problem will be solved. What could have been a great school system will in fact look worse than inner city milwaukee. "

" I am on the edge of my keyboard waiting to hear the final verdict of their direction. Ho my, what will it be. Not to mention that this funding shortage landed on this needs amamzingly in the first place. The money all comes from the same bowl. These highly paid marketers, and the ones we paid for the last referendum whip it up into something that seems undoubtedly 'badly needed'. It is all a matter of priorities. Spending that is, and the shortage of money could have very well landed on quite a few other zones rather than these facility needs. You are being manipulated here people! Ask Kember about his near $27,000 per year contributed to just retirement? "

" $33M in hoarded taxpayer money sitting in reserve, and the school board is too greedy to use it for repair and renovations for school facilities which would result in better safety and security for our children.

The school board needs to remember where the money originally came from and use it for the community's benefit when the need arises, instead of looking for more handouts. "

" These board members are unbelievable. They have have PLENTY of $$$ sitting in this fund. Rather than spend some of this surplus, they want to keep pulling moeny from the taxpayers. I'll say it again...WE HAVE NO MORE MONEY TO GIVE!!! what part of that do you not understand??? "

" It is absolutely ridiculous that they have over $30M in a "rainy day" fund. Spend some of it on your maintenance needs. One reason taxes are so oppressive is these organizations taxing beyond their needs and hoarding the money. "

" Can anyone think of a better reason to use the
"fund balance" other than for safety and security?
    What a joke!

"Safety and boilers will garner public support"..
How about managing the facilities in the first place without the need for a referendum and repeatedly tapping into the taxpayers. WE DON'T
HAVE A FUND BALANCE OUT HERE! "
