Field, track readied for new turf at UW-L sports complex

.
The blacktop base for the track and field is an obvious new addition at the site of the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The new base isn’t just any blacktop — it is porous and permeable for better drainage, said Dan Graham, business manager for Fowler & Hammer, the general contractor for the project.
If all goes well, workers by the end of the week will begin putting down matting for the artificial grass or field turf, said Joe Baker, UW-L athletic director.

The project is a week ahead of schedule on the timeline to be ready for the WIAA state track meet in June 2009, said Graham.

“We can bless Mother Nature and the weather for that,” said Baker.

The field and track have been a prime focus for completion before next spring, in case the weather is not as cooperative then, said Baker.

Once the field turf is down, they’ll work on the track surface, said Baker. At the same time, grandstand work continues with the footings and foundation being placed, said Baker.

“It is slowly coming together,” said Baker. “It is starting to look like something I can recog

nize.”

" When are the private boxes going to be constructed? I am glad you are spending so wisely a room tax that could have gone our taxpayer way. After this project was originally lauded as 'private donations'. Maybe that money could have been assessed to go toward opening up Bliss Rd. Seemed logical to me, that it is the number one tourist destination in our community. Instead? Private boxes so those with sweaters tied around their necks can be comfortable above the masses. "
