Pickens’ ideas about alternative fuels are exciting - and make sense

.
The most interesting thing about this year’s presidential campaign might not be the candidates themselves but an old Republican oil man with an idea.

T. Boone Pickens, a conservative who donated the money for the “Swiftboat” ad campaign against Democrat John Kerry in 2004, has weighed in this time with a decidedly un-Republican idea.
And he’s right.

Pickens, who has made a fortune drilling for oil, argues that this is one energy crisis we cannot drill our way out of.

And why is that? Because the United States has 3 percent of the world’s oil reserves and consumes 20 percent of the world’s production. That’s a losing proposition — even if we drastically increase our drilling in environmentally sensitive areas, as Republicans want to do, or force oil companies to drill on unused leases elsewhere, as Democrats sought.

Pickens wants to do two things:

  • Convert the U.S. fleet of heavy trucks from diesel to natural gas. He says this will dramatically reduce (by 40 percent) our use of gasoline. While he contends that he is not talking about using natural gas for cars, there certainly is no reason we could not do that as well.

  • Develop wind power in a big way in what he refers to as the “wind corridor,” mostly Western states with steady winds.

What’s exciting about these plans is that they get us off the dime in terms of the way we think about energy. There is no other way to look at this: We absolutely need to develop alternatives to oil.

Look at China. That nation, with a billion people, is becoming more and more like the United States in its energy use. Other developing countries will follow. Given that increased world demand for oil, it is absolute folly to believe that we can continue on our present path — even if we could somehow drill more domestic oil.

The answer is alternative energy. Just ask an oil man.

" Environmentalists are not opposed to powerlines that make economic, environmental sense. If the news could possibly understand the concept of "distributed generation" people would understand that when "locally owned" and "locally operated" renewables are placed on existing powerlines--i.e. an underline, we then do not need 1650 new miles of 345Kv 150 foot tall powerlines that the utilities are proposing in MN (the lines then come to WI, Ill, and beyond). What we are looking for and are creating is locally produced energy that builds the local economy, that is accountable to people in your neighborhood and stays on existing cooridors. SW MN is a great example of how communities and local investors have come together to build a sustainable energy future. It can happen there and it can happen here. "

" I applaud the wind initiative, but there's a "grain of salt" to take it with: Pickens owns a LOT of natural gas, no wonder he's so heavily promoting gas along with wind. "

" what the Trib 'editorial' board, as ussua;, seems utterly clueless about. 1. converting from diesel to natural gas will do absolutely nothing to lower gasoline consumption. they are two entirely different fuels. 2. using our primary home heating fuel to power vehicles comes with many unintended consequences, remember what ethanol has done to food prices. 3. alternate energies are great, but you need to get that energy to the grid. the mantra today seems to be 'no power transmission lines', so what good is producing energy if you can't get it where it's needed? Trib 'editorial' board, you are doing disservice to your readers by constantly spouting your bias drivel, and breaking things down along 'party' lines. as long as energy issues are broken down along 'party' lines, nothing will ever get done, and 'We the People' lose. "
