Wausau tickets up; La Crosse citations hold steady

.
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A new report shows Wausau police issued more than 16,000 parking tickets in 2007, a 71 percent increase from the previous year.

Wausau Traffic Lt. Dennis Saager said the increase is due to more officers on the street as well as hand-held computers that make ticket-writing more efficient.
La Crosse traffic enforcement has used the hand-held units for about five years, and write almost 63,000 tickets annually, officials said.

But in 2007, the number of tickets in La Crosse dropped by 548, or about 0.01 percent fewer than in 2006, according to La Crosse police.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates for 2006, Wausau has slightly fewer than 39,000 residents, while

La Crosse’s population is about 50,000.

Jim Janke, co-owner of Janke Book Store in Wausau, said he hasn’t heard any customers complain about the stricter parking enforcement.

The tighter rules probably are good for business, Janke said, because someone who parks illegally all day can make other potential customers less likely to shop downtown.

Tribune staff contributed to this report.

" To wiseup (ha oxymoron), your comprehensive (that means reading words and understanding) skills are classic for your uneducated rantings in this blog. The words clearly say parking tickets increased 71% in Wausau. Your old constant boring crybaby comments are laughable at least, including your dumb false list of fleecing. Its obvious you have been busted numerous times for serious crimes from your lame whining (that means crybaby whaaaaah). "

" Wow, this article made it sound like Wausau crime went up 71%! In reality, LaCrosse is famous for beer, high property tax and excessive citations! Parking, leaf littering, gum chewing, noisy pipes on Harleys, public intox, ANYTHING to FLEECE a BUCK from visitors and locals! "

" La Crosse's finest are top notch when enforcing parking citations. A couple of years ago my boss and I grabbed a meal at Hooter's. After a whopping 40 minute meal we returned to his vehicle where he received a citation for "backing into a parking spot". First ticket of any kind the guy has received in his life. La Crosse made a great impression but hey they cleaned up the streets that day. "

" Oh, really?

1) What are streets for, anyway? No parking (overnight) at all makes Wausau a bigger bunch of Control Freaks than La Crosse, I guess.

2) This last winter, I observered VERY few overnight tickets on obviously "mis-parked" cars, compared to years past (I've lived here 50+ years). And totally impassible streets as a result. "

" One reason Wausau writes fewer tickets per capita is "Overnight parking on streets is not allowed". This is every street, year-round! Most of the tickets written in La Crosse are for alternate side parking violations. "

" You've all missed the point.

OK, I've "crunched" the numbers for you.

La Crosse's population is about 25% higher than Wausau.

But tickets written here are almost 400% more.

This is clearly a Money-Making Proposition for our "fair" city, no? "

" Maybe most of those wouldn't get a ticket if there was more space in the parking lot to park instead of half the parking spaces being taken by business owners. "

daddylonglegs wrote on Aug 20, 2008 7:40 AM:

" Most of these tickets are probably people just being lazy. They want to park as close as possible so they don't have to walk. Alternate side parking tickets are another matter. I think that whole thing is a racket. "

" Then obey the rules Kusty. Because the only people that don't like the laws are the ones that break them. "

" Don't forget, we have the "parking nazi" downtown who probably gives out 60,000 of those parking tickets himself. I hate that little tyrant. "
