Adela A. Berg
WINONA, Minn./BANGOR, Wis. Adela A. Berg, 99, of Winona and formerly of Bangor died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at Sauer Memorial Home in Winona.
Born June 7, 1909, in Sauk County, Wis., Adela Anna Ninnemann was the daughter of John and Louise (Schulz) Ninnemann. She became a member of God’s family through baptism on July 4, 1909, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Loganville, Wis. She confirmed her faith in the Lord on March 25, 1923, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rock Springs, Wis. After her graduation from Reedsburg (Wis.) High School, she attended Sauk County Training School and La Crosse State Teachers College. She taught in elementary schools in rural Sauk County and in Bangor. Adela’s love for children and her lifelong interest in learning led her to serve for a number of years as a teacher substitute and aide.
On Aug. 27, 1938, she married Edward C. Berg in Rock Springs, Wis. Adela and Ed spent most of their married life in Bangor. They moved to Winona in 1999. Ed preceded her in death on July 14, 2002.
Adela is survived by a daughter, Linda Berg and a son, John E. (Susan) Berg, all of Winona, Minn.; a grandson, the Rev. John C. (Tricia) Berg and great-grandchildren, Madison, Annika and Charles, all of Viroqua, Wis.; a granddaughter, Anne (Eric) Henne of Wauwatosa, Wis.; a brother-in-law, Fred Buege; a special cousin, Glen (Mary) Schulz; and nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Erma Buege.
Adela’s kind and gentle nature was a special blessing from the Lord, as was her faith in his promises. The greatest of those promises was fulfilled when he took her home to Heaven.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 401 16th Ave. N., Bangor. The Revs. Roy Hefti and Paul Welke will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or School, Bangor; or to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Winona.

BOSCOBEL, Wis. John M. Brown, 59, of Boscobel died Tuesday, Aug. 19 2008, at his home. Richard Dick’ C. Hieb
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. Richard “Dick” C. Hieb, 70, of Black River Falls died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, while undergoing valve replacement surgery at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
Dick was born on April 5, 1938 in LaGrande, Ore., to Clifford C. and Cecelia (Allgaier) Hieb. He was raised on a farm in rural Wausau, Wis.
He graduated from Wausau High School in 1956 and he attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill., for two years.
While in college, he met and married Ellen Henson on Aug. 1, 1959, in Bethel, Ohio. The couple lived in Kankakee for five years. They moved to Wausua and lived there for two years. They moved to Black River Falls in 1967.
Dick sold automobiles and worked in a number of different positions with the American Natural Gas Company.
He became a health and life insurance agent and he also did estate planning. After purchasing the Sandbergen, Hagen and Dimmick Insurance Agencies, he owned and operated the Dick Hieb Insurance Agency. Following the sale of his agency, he began selling and building homes in 1994 as Dick Hieb Homes.
Dick was a member of the Black River Falls Fire Department, Rotary Club and United Methodist Church. He was the original coordinator for the Black River Falls Emergency Medical Services.
He was an avid deer hunter. He liked to snowmobile and he loved spending time with his family at “the cabin on the lake.”
Surviving are his wife, Ellen; a son, Brian (Michele) Hieb of Black River Falls; two daughters, Deborah (Lon) Buss of De Forest, Wis., and Lynette (Todd) Gates, Black River Falls; one sister, Ruth (Larry) Shoemaker of Pascagoula, Miss.; six grandchildren, Marie and Melissa Buss, Stacy and Matthew Gates and Mason and Trevor Hieb; his father-in-law, Floyd Henson of Edgewater, Fla.; and three sister-in-laws, Sharon Hieb of Wausau, Wis., Barbara (Durwood) Taylor of Lexington, Ky. and Pamela Bradley of Cincinnati.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Phyllis Beever; and a brother, John Hieb.
Funeral services for Richard “Dick” C. Hieb will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Black River Falls United Methodist Church, 100 N. Fourth St., Black River Falls. Pastor Kathleen Jury will officiate and burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Black River Falls. Relatives and friends may call at the United Methodist Church on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
The family prefers memorials be given to Black River Falls Emergency Medical Services, Black River Falls Dive Team or United Methodist Church.

Palma Thora Jeffers
Palma Thora Jeffers, 90, of La Crosse died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.
She was born Jan. 30, 1918, to Martin and Tilly (Hanson) Myhre in Vernon County, Wis. On April 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Francis Jeffers in La Farge, Wis., by the Rev. Peter Holmes. She was employed at Hillview Health Care Center in the laundry for many years.
Palma is survived by two sons, Myron (Georgia) Jeffers of Cave City, Ark., and Jerry (Audrey) Jeffers of Sparta, Wis.; three grandsons, Daniel (Peggy) Jeffers, Donald (Debbie) Jeffers and Dean (Mary) Jeffers; one granddaughter, Amanda (Ryan) Zuege; four great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; stepgrandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Charlotte Myhre, Marlene Jeffers and Vera Jeffers; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Tilly Myhre; husband, Francis; two granddaughters, Dawn and Julie; one grandson, Jason; two brothers, Lester and Norman Myhre; an infant sister; and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Main St. (Hwy. 14 S.), Westby, Wis. Pastor John Eumurian will officiate with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery, rural Westby. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m.

Francis Frank’ O. LeMoine
REEDSBURG, Wis. Francis “Frank” O. LeMoine, 76, of Reedsburg,died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, in his home.
He was born on May 28, 1932, in Richland Center, Wis., the son of Hallie and Josephine (Young) LeMoine. Frank was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Army. He farmed for 20 years. Frank worked as a deputy with the Sauk County (Wis.) Sheriff’s Department. He later worked at a plastics factory in Baraboo, Wis. Frank enjoyed going to auctions, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include six children, Dennis (Joanne) LeMoine of Baraboo, Wis., Sheldon (Barb) LeMoine, of Rockford, Ill., Curtis (Valerie) LeMoine, of Reedsburg, Cheri (Randy) Hackner, of Lyndon Station, Wis., Kelly (Barry) Wehrs, of Sparta, Wis., and Christopher LeMoine of Sparta; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth (Carol), of Marshfield, Wis.; his special friend, Phyllis Burgess, of Reedsburg; Phyllis’s daughters and their families, Eva (Steven) Matekel, of Hillpoint, Wis., and Darlene (Steven) Coens of Reedsburg; his best friend, John DeChart of Sparta; his traveling companions, Charlie and Tammy; other relatives; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Hallie LeMoine; four brothers, Gaylord, Linford, Virgil and Herbert; and an infant sister, Gwendolyn May LeMoine.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg with Pastor Ben Seamans officiating. Military rites will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated.

Sister Mary Kay (Marian) Maloney, FSPA
Sister Mary Kay (Marian) Maloney, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 86, died Monday, Aug.18, 2008, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse.
Sister Mary Kay was born to Dennis and Katherine (McAndrews) Maloney on May 2, 1922, in Superior, Wis. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1940 and made profession of vows in 1943. Sister Mary Kay served as a music teacher for 35 years in parochial schools in Iowa, Washington and Wisconsin, including eleven years in Superior, Wis. From 1981-1986 she was Director of Religious Education in Prescott and then spent three years in parish ministry in Minneapolis. Before retiring to St. Rose Convent in 1997, Sister Mary Kay ministered as a senior companion and volunteer at Lyndale Manor and with the Sharing & Caring program in Minneapolis. In 2000 Villa St. Joseph became her home.
Sister Mary Kay is survived by her Franciscan community and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Dolores and Rosanne.
Friends may call after 3:15 p.m. today, Aug. 20, when the body will be brought to St. Rose Convent in La Crosse. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. in Mary of the Angels Chapel. The Rev. Jude Weisenbeck will preside at the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in Mary of the Angels Chapel. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.

Vernon Frank Walter
LA CRESCENT, Minn. Vernon Frank Walter, 88, of La Crescent died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at Golden Living Center in La Crescent.
Vernon was born on Feb. 26, 1920, on a farm outside of Hokah, Minn., to Frank and Anna (Hafner) Walter. He attended St. Peter’s Catholic School in Hokah until the ninth grade when he was needed on the farm. He was a child of the Depression. Vernon enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. After serving in the Aleutian Islands, he was transferred to the European front. He served heroically in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1945. After the war he married the love of his life, Rita Bezpaletz, on June 15, 1946. That same year he joined the Trane Co., retiring after 39½ years in 1985.
Together, he and Rita rebuilt a chicken coop into a home for their family. He and his brother Joe farmed for 18 years in the Pine Creek Valley. After his retirement from Trane he made many crafts and together with Rita spent many good times at flea markets in Northern Wisconsin. In between times, he served on the La Crescent Town Board, Crucifixion Catholic Church Council and Cemetery Board, was 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus of Winona and was very active in the pro-life movement. Vernon was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. Vernon was noted for his love of baseball, especially the Minnesota Twins, singing and playing practical jokes on the unsuspecting.
He is survived by his children, James (Joan), Michael, Jean (Ron) Farmer and Peggy; grandchildren, Jessica and Joellen Walter, Kevin (Heather) Farmer, Greg Farmer and Brice, Jill and Kim Christianson; brothers and sisters, Sister Rita Ann Walter, Francis (Arlene), Margie Balzar, Joe (Colette), Mary Ann (Marty) Zadow, Norbert (Mary) and Richard (Teresa); a sister-in-law, Dawn Walter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita, of 57 years; a grandson, Brent Farmer; three brothers, Willard, George and Raymond; and a sister, Dorothy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Church of the Crucifixion in La Crescent. The Revs. Gregory G. Havel and Paul J. Breza and Msgr. Donald W. Grubisch will officiate. Burial with military honors by Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 will be in the Crucifixion Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Maxine Eleanor (MacGillis) Woodard
Maxine Eleanor (MacGillis) Woodard, 96, of La Crosse died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, atBethany-Riverside Nursing Facility in La Crosse.
She was born June 11, 1912, to Donald Angus and Helen (Harbaugh) MacGillis in Boyd, Wis. Maxine was raised on a farm in Gilman Wis., the oldest of three children. She attended schools in that area and graduated from Gilman High School. After attending the State Teachers’ College of Eau Claire, Wis., she graduated in 1932 with a lifelong teacher’s certificate. Maxine taught at Chelsey and Gilman for six years.
She was joined in marriage to Cleary Thomas Woodard on Aug. 7, 1937, at the Catholic Church in Gilman and he preceded her in death in 1974. After living in Lake Hallie, Wis., for a short time, the family moved to La Crosse where Cleary was transferred with the Drummond Packing Company. Maxine substitute taught in the La Crosse grade schools and worked at JC Penney for 12 years.
Maxine is survived by a son, Daniel (Susan) Woodard of Onalaska, Wis.; a daughter, Ellen (Michael) Mikicich of Little Elm, Texas; two stepsons, Chris and Ryan Kelley of La Crosse; a special sister-in-law, Karmina MacGillis of Round Lake, Ill.; nephews, Dr. Douglas (Dawn) MacGillis, Daniel (Annamarie) MacGillis, Thomas and Gary Woodard; and a granddaughter, Kim.
In addition to her husband, Cleary, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Douglas and Donald.
Lovingly remembered by family and friends as a kind and gentle person, Maxine was very proud of her Scottish heritage. Her grandfather MacGillis had emigrated from Scotland via Canada and Michigan and had settled in the Chippewa Falls, Wis., area; raising nine children including Maxine’s father Donald, the oldest.
A celebration of Maxine’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the graveside in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, with the Rev. Donald Iliff officiating.
