Lowering the drinking age? The real answer is responsibility

.
College presidents from about 100 institutions are rethinking the idea of the drinking age.

They are beginning to believe that having the drinking age at 21 actually encourages dangerous binge drinking.
Local higher education leaders are more skeptical. University of Wisconsin-

La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow would like to see more research before endorsing a change in the drinking age.

But he did say something that is more pertinent.

“I think we need to do everything we can to help students make more responsible decisions about alcohol, and that may take some creative approaches,” Gow said.

The problem we face in La Crosse is not that young people are experimenting with alcohol, it’s that some are using alcohol in dangerous amounts.

If someone drinks to the point of having a 0.20 or even 0.30 blood alcohol level (0.08 is the limit at which a driver is considered intoxicated under the law), they are putting themselves in a dangerous situation.

At those high levels, young drinkers are vulnerable to accidents or injury. Police have reported picking up young people walking in the wrong direction, but thinking that they are headed back to campus.

Remember that all of the young men who drowned in the Mississippi River during the past decade had blood alcohol levels of 0.20 or more. Those are dangerous levels.

What do we need? The three campuses have been working to provide alternative programming — activities that don’t involve alcohol.

And we also need ways to talk about responsible drinking, and to encourage moderation. The problem isn’t so much that young people are drinking — it’s the level to which some are doing it.

The answer isn’t prohibition; it’s safety and responsibility.

" Duh once again the Tribune is clueless there has been a hundreds of years study on this matter it is called Europe, guess what country has a drinking age? Guess what country has the most alcohol problems? Ding Ding The Brits. Much like this country has made sex taboo drugs and alcohol are abused because they are restricted. Thank the Conservative party for all that and enuffalready der I mean George W. I know it is you because of the spelling, STFU. "

" It doesn't really matter what the drinking age is, kids will always kids. They are going to drink until themselves stupid, legal or not. Just leave it alone, WI gets more money towards road repairs with it at 21 anyway. "

" When alcohol was outlawed, normal ordinary citizens became criminals! Adults over 18 will drink alcohol regardless of the penalties. 'Do as we say, not as we did' NEVER works from generation to generation and you don't have to be a college professor to figure that one out! Brew and Bloom places will guarantee the government will not be able to control alcohol or pot! "

Parents never stop protecting kids. So goes the cycle how do you blame the kids for not growing up, if the don't ever know its time to grow up. " "

I guess that you aren't going to vote for Barack since he favors keeping the drinking age at 21. Thanks. "

" Let me get this straight - (some/many/?most)underage students act irresponsibly regarding drinking habits as it is, so the solution is to lower the drinking age and legally allow MORE to drink? Just making it legal doesnt translate into responsible behavior on the individuals part. We have too many adults (ie in their 30s, 40s and beyond) with irresponsible drinking habits. What great role models. This experiment has already been tried in the past. There is a reason that the legal age was raised back to 21. No need to re-invent the wheel. "

" The drinking age issue is just another thorn in a shoe from the Ronald Reagan years along with FAILED energy policies and DEFICETS "
