Levee failure at mining plant leads to evacuations

.
TAYLOR, Wis. — The partial failure of an earthen pond levee on Badger Mining Corp. property has led to the evacuation of several residents today.

Badger Mining Corp. discovered the problem on the pond on the west portion of the property on Hwy. P at about 12:20 a.m. today, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and the potentially affected areas include the western corner of the town of Curran and the northern part of the town of Springfield in Jackson County, and the southeastern corner of the town of Pigeon and the northeastern corner of the town of Preston in Trempealeau County.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and Jackson and Trempealeau counties’ emergency management teams are at the site and ask that people avoid the area. No injuries have been reported.

The emergency management teams have suggested evacuation of the potential affected areas along Hwy. W south of the intersection with Nerby Road and along River Road just south of Hwy. 95. Several residents of the effected area have evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Authorities said there is no immediate threat to the village of Taylor or city of Blair.

According to the company's Web site, the Taylor plant is processes hydraulic fracturing and gravel packing sands for the use in the extraction of oil and gas. It produces about 800,000 tons of high-quality industrial sand a year for many specialty applications.
