The itch to be the driver he was when he won the Late Model Division points title in 2001 at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway always will be with Powell. The smile on Powell’s face after finishing second to Kevin Nuttleman in Saturday’s Kwik Trip Late Model Division feature race showed he still has fun on the track.

But Powell, who now only races part-time, has other things to get him excited. Take for example his family.
“I do miss (racing), but I’ve got a little boy who’s going to start kindergarten in the fall. He plays t-ball, and he’s going to play flag football,” said Powell, who has raced in six Late Model features this season. “I’ve got other priorities now.”
So Powell, who hopes to compete at the Fairgrounds Speedway on a more consistent basis in 2009, must take advantage of his opportunities when he gets them. That certainly has been the case as of late, as Powell has three top-10 finishes over the last four weeks. On Saturday, he held off a hard-charging Steve Carlson, the Late Model points leader, and was in contention for a feature win, but he couldn’t overtake Nuttleman.
“That’s the best kind of rollercoaster ride you could ever be on,” Powell said.
TWICE AS NICE: Rick Schermerhorn joined both Nick Clements and Jimmy Gilster as two-time feature winners in the North Country Contractors Grand National Sportsman Division. With his victory, Brad Warthan is one of four United Auto Supply Thunderstox Division driver to win two features this season. Warthan joins Jason Stark, Steve Owen and Andy Moore.
REDEMPTION: Sportsman Division driver Jerrod Loging, who flipped his car and broke off a tire on
Aug. 9, came back strong and won the B-feature.
FILLING IN: John Inglett stepped in for his brother, Matt, who competes in the Sportsman Division. Matt was attending a wedding.
CATCH HIM IF YOU CAN: Carlson was the fastest qualifier for the ninth time this season. Carlson’s qualifying time was 19.926 seconds, or 98.540 mph.
