I know, I know, there are plenty of reasons you can throw at me of why it’s necessary: 1) Coaches need live action to determine who is going to be on their roster; 2) Starters need time to “shake the rust off” and get their timing down; 3) Depth charts are decided during the preseason; 4)The NFL needs the money; 5) TV networks need the money.
Okay, if Nos. 1, 2 and 3 are really the reason for the preseason, fine. Just cut it in half — two preseason games, then expand the regular season to 18 games if you really, really need that many games.
If Nos. 4 and 5 are the real reason, then how much money are you really making? Look at the half-empty stadiums. Look at the ratings. Preseason games generally stink. It’s time to either reduce their number, or eliminate them all together.
