Lois M. (Wienke) Jones, 93, of La Crosse passed away Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family with arrangements. A complete obituary will follow in Sunday’s Tribune.

CAMP DOUGLAS, Wis. — Connie L. Crohn, 54, of Camp Douglas passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Torkelson Funeral Home, Tomah, Wis. Rick Lanning will officiate. Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family with arrangements.

Johanna Rose Thorsen

PIGEON FALLS, Wis. — Johanna Rose Thorsen, 87, of Pigeon Falls died on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pigeon Falls. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery, Oak Brook Terrace, Ill. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Jack Funeral Home, Whitehall, and also one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Cecilia Jane Reget

Cecilia Jane Reget, 85, of La Crosse died at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at St. James the Less Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home (809 Gillette St). A complete obituary will be in Sunday’s paper.

Artis F. ‘Art’ Yandt

Artis F. “Art” Yandt, 80, of La Crosse died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center, La Crosse. A complete obituary will follow. Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse is assisting the family.

Verlee M. Clements

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Verlee M. Clements, 86, of Council Bluffs died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at her home. Verlee was born Jan. 4, 1922, in Walnut, Iowa, to Wilbert and Mable (Hansen) Nelson. After graduating from Walnut High School, she attended beauty school and was a beauty operator in Minden for many years before retiring in 1980.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Orville Dobernecker; her parents; and a grandson, Michael Bullock.

Verlee is survived by her husband, Leo Clements; daughters, Twyla and her husband Leon Warneke of Council Bluffs, and Luanne and her husband Ralph Watson of Eugene, Ore.; son, Larry Neff and his wife Jeanette of Council Bluffs; 13 stepchildren; nine grandchildren and many step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and many stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and cousins.

Visitation with the family will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home, Council Bluffs. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church Orchard Campus, 20794 Hwy. 92, in Council Bluffs. A luncheon at the church will immediately follow the service. Cortege will leave the church at 1 p.m. for burial in the Minden Cemetery. The family will direct memorials.

Jerald ‘Jerry’ Layton Roberg

VIROQUA, Wis. — Jerald “Jerry” Layton Roberg, 81, of Viroqua died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua, where he had been a resident since August 2006.

He was born May 31, 1927, in rural Viroqua to Robert “Jack” and Julia (Skrede) Roberg. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

On Feb. 27, 1954, he married Lila Davis at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien, Wis. He worked at several service stations and then worked as a custodian for the Viroqua Area Schools for over 25 years. Jerry also served with the 107 Maintenance Company of the Wisconsin Army National Guard with total military service of over 30 years. He was a member of the 32 Division Association, a life member of Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 of which he was a past commander. He also held membership at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Viroqua. Jerry enjoyed his many years with the National Guard where he was a cook. He and Lila also enjoyed traveling in their motor home.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Lila of Viroqua; two daughters, Julie Roberg (Thom) Sandvick of La Crosse and Joan Roberg (Joe) Grochowina of West Allis, Wis.; one son, Bryan Roberg of Adolphus, Ky.; five grandchildren, Brigida Grochowina, Bryan (Desiree) Grochowina, Thommy Sandvick, Ryan Clark and Walter (Lindsey) Grochowina; and three great-grandchildren, Alexis, Yessenia and Brianna Jo. He is also survived by one brother, Richard “Dick” (Agnes) Roberg of Viroqua; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Julia Roberg; and a nephew, Jeff Roberg.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Margaret Eiben Hoversten officiating. Burial will be in Belgium Ridge Cemetery in rural Viroqua, with honors accorded by Running-Johnson-Ray Post 3032 and the United States Army Honors Team. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call from noon to services Tuesday at the church.

Osborne ‘Ozzie’ M. Moe

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Osborne “Ozzie” M. Moe, 95, of Black River Falls, owner of the former Moe’s Shoe Store died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, in the Family Heritage Care Center in Black River Falls.

Ozzie was born in Black River Falls on Nov. 18, 1912, to Peter L. and Anna (Jermstad) Moe.

He was raised in Black River Falls, and he graduated from high school in 1931. He graduated from Carroll College in 1935.

He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945.

Ozzie married Marianna Reuter in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 3, 1942.

He was a partner with his brother Price in a clothing business in Black River Falls until 1947. From 1947-78, he owned and operated Moe’s Shoe Store in downtown Black River Falls.

He was past president of the Black River Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Recreation Association, the Lions Club, the Jackson County Red Cross and School Committee. He served on the SESA No. 11 school committee for 19 years. In 1972, he received the P.D.K., Lay Educator of the Year Award.

He served for 19 years on the Wisconsin Department of Education Appeal Board. He served on the Jackson County Health and Human Services Board, and he was on the Board of Directors of the Western Wisconsin Area Agency of Aging. He was a 40-year member of Black River Falls Masonic Lodge No. 74 F. & A.M. He served on the Evangelical Lutheran Church Council.

In 2007, he received The Service Above Self Award given by the local Rotary Club in recognition of his community service.

Surviving are his wife, Marianna; a son, Thomas (Janelle) Moe, Ashland, Wis.; two daughters, Ellyn (Alan) Stauffacher, New Glarus, Wis., and Susan (Harry) Peterson, West Salem, Wis.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Erik (Bridget) and Sam (Marcie) Peterson, Amy (B.J.) Brenna, Ryan (Tracy) and Bekah (Gregg Jamison) Stauffacher, seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers, Rollin “Junk,” Price, Price, Lawrence, Philip and Alvin “Beaner”.

Funeral services for Osborne “Ozzie” M. Moe will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Ramie Bakken will officiate, and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls. Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Torgerson’s Funeral Home (715-284-4321), 408 N. Water St., and 10 a.m. Tuesday to services at the church.

Pallbearers will be Ozzie’s five grandchildren and their spouses.

Janice Beverly Flood

GALESVILLE, Wis. — Janice Beverly Flood, 81, of Galesville died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Marinuka Manor, Galesville. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville. Burial will be in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday to services at the church. Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville Chapel, is assisting the family.

David Allen Knoll

David Allen Knoll, 55, of La Crosse died at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. He was born Oct. 5, 1952, in Reedsburg, Wis., to Carl and Ellen Knoll. He graduated from Royall/Elroy High School in 1970. Then he attended WWTC for two years. He worked for La Crosse Footwear for 34 years. David enjoyed grilling out for his family and attending to his yard.

David is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Deborah Darling-Gittens (Ed and grandson, Eddie) and Marlene Darling; grandson, Michael David Darling; sisters, Carol Kriemelmeyer (Bruce) and Lisa Rhodes (Leroy); and niece, RaeAnn Rhodes. David journeyed into the eternal life with his maker and donated his body to science. There will be a private service.

David was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Will and Iva (Macomber) Knoll and maternal grandparents, Pete and Albena (Vitcenda) McCoy.

S. Jay Leasum

WEST SALEM, Wis. — S. Jay Leasum, 76, of West Salem died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1931, in Osseo, Wis., to Robert Nels and Gertrude (Hughes) Leasum. Jay was a Navy veteran having served from 1951 to 1955 and was a member of the West Salem American Legion Post 51. On Aug. 12, 1959, he married Helen Weaver in Canton, Ohio.

He graduated from Eau Claire Technical College with an associate degree in mechanical drafting. Jay was employed at Trane Co. in La Crosse as a mechanical draftsman from 1957 until 1987 and then worked at Menard’s from 1988 until his retirement in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; three daughters, Gretchen Dickie (Scott) of Bozeman, Mont., Sarah Garlick (Ken) of Westby, Wis., and Bridget Fortun (Randy) of West Salem; six grandchildren, Matthew and Rachel Dickie, Emily Garlick, and Amanda, Jennifer and Heather Fortun; one sister, Gertrude Weaver (Andrew) of Wooster, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Millie Leasum of Osseo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Markovich (Mike); and a brother, Robert Leasum.

Jay’s relationship with Jesus Christ was the most important part of his life, along with his family. He was a devoted member of La Crescent Evangelical Free Church.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Evangelical Free Church, 3936 County Hwy. B, La Crosse. Pastors Dan Cravillion and Roy Anderson will officiate. Private family burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery, West Salem. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Tuesday to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to La Crescent Evangelical Free Church. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold J. Larson

MABEL, Minn. — Harold J. Larson, 82, of Mabel died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at his home.

Harold was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Newburg Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to George and Beulah (Soiney) Larson. He attended the Riceford and Mabel Schools. He farmed with his father in the Riceford area before serving in the United States Army. He served in Germany during the Korean Conflict. After his service in the Army he resumed farming near Riceford.

On Sept. 24, 1960, he married Helen Johnson Opsahl in Harmony. He remained on the farm until recently when they moved into Mabel. He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church and the American Legion and enjoyed his farming and playing cards.

Harold is survived by his wife, Helen of Mabel; a daughter, Darlene Larson of Eitzen, Minn.; two stepchildren, Diane (John DeLong) Ferring of Lansing, Iowa, and Dale (Dorene) Opsahl of Caledonia, Minn.; six grandchildren, Jerry and Jill Hammel, Rick Ferring, and Darci, Dariel, and Dylan Opsahl; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Ava, and Chloe; four sisters, Bernice Garness of Mabel, Norma Spitzmiller and Helen (Jake) Beaman, both of Rockford, Ill., and Marie Betsinger of Rockland, Wis.; three brothers, Leland (Marcy) of Green Valley, Ariz., and Leslie (Carol) and Richard (Marcia), both of Mabel; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Ronald Ferring.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel, with the Rev. Gail Klavetter officiating. Burial will be in Riceford Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Kathleen M. ‘Toots’ Schulze

Kathleen Marie “Toots” Schulze, 87, of La Crosse has gone to be with her Lord on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Facility, La Crosse.

She was born April 28, 1921, in Victory, Wis., the eldest daughter of Elmer and Tressa (Hass) Paggi. Kathleen attended schools in Victory and De Soto, Wis. She married Berlie DeLap and together they had two sons, Jerry and Ronald. Kathleen and Berlie later divorced. In the 1940s, Kathleen moved to La Crosse where she worked for FW Means for over 23 years, retiring in 1981. On April 24, 1976, she married Marlin Schulze and they celebrated 25 years of marriage in 2001. Marlin preceded Kathleen in death in January of 2002.

Kathy was affectionately known as “the cookie grandma” by her great-grandchildren. She was an accomplished cook and her family looked forward to the get-togethers at her house for her wonderful meals which were always abundant with new and flavorful surprises. Kathleen loved playing cards with her family and friends, and spending time at their North La Crosse boathouse, where she could out-fish anyone. She was a very loving wife, mother, stepmother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her family.

Survivors include a son, Jerry DeLap (Barb Carlisle) of Tennessee, and his five children, Michele (Doug) Nordeen of Lakeville, Minn., Scott (Missy) DeLap of Chatanooga, Tenn., Kyle (Julie) DeLap, Kurt DeLap, and Ross DeLap, all of La Crosse; a son, Ronald (Vicki) DeLap of La Crosse, and their two sons, Tony (Tonya) DeLap of La Crosse, and Andy DeLap of Chicago.

Kathleen is also survived by four stepsons, Dewey (Patty) Schulze of Onalaska, Wis., and their two sons, Mike Schulze (Kelley Peterson) of Onalaska, and Steven (Melissa) Schulze of La Crosse, Jerry (Shelly) Schulze and their three children, Annie Schulze, Dee Dee Schulze, and Adam (Sheena) Schulze, all of La Crosse, Doug (Marjie) Schulze of Puyallup, Wash., and Bobby Schulze (friend, Michelle) of Savage, Minn., and his two children, Jaye and Sam Schulze; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Eileen Paggi of La Crosse; a sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Robert Johnston of Ferryville, Wis.; Marlin’s sisters and brothers, Gladys Vetch, Evelyn (Lee) Denstad, Gerald Schulze, and Lawrence (Betty) Schulze; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Having a namesake is a true sign of a family’s love, and Kathleen had two, her brand new great-granddaughter, Ella Kathleen DeLap, and a niece, Kathy Marie Johnston.

In addition to her husband, Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse. The Rev. Richard Pamperin of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crosse will officiate. Entombment will be in Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of services at the funeral home.

Kathleen’s family would like to thank nurse Linda, the staff and friends at Bethany on Cass Assisted Living, and to Dr. Joan Matey of Gundersen Lutheran for the years of wonderful care; also to pastors and members of First Evangelical Lutheran Church for the visits, and to the many family members including devoted niece, Jackie, for frequently playing Kathleen’s favorite song on the piano during the social hour at Bethany.
