Aquatic center going to the dogs for fundraiser

.
All swimmers for this pool party must have four legs, fur and current vaccinations.

The Onalaska Aquatic Center opens Saturday to host the second annual Diggity Dog Dip, the area’s only public open swim for canines.
“You’d be surprised how well the dogs are behaved,” said Pat Kucera, event organizer and owner of Diggity Dog Daycare. “They’re all so into having fun.”

The event serves as a fundraiser for the Coulee Region Humane Society and Onalaska Park and Recreation Department for ongoing maintenance of a new dog exercise area near the pool.

About 200 dogs attended last summer and $1,400 was collected, Kucera said. He wouldn’t be surprised if 300 dogs show Saturday and the event raises $3,000.

“It’s going to be wet,” Kucera said. Some dogs swim, some play chase and others “just try to figure out what’s going on,” he said.

No people will be allowed in the pool with the dogs. The pool closed for the season Sunday, and chlorine will have evaporated by Saturday.

The pool has a zero-depth entry for those too timid to jump in. Plastic pools will be available for smaller dogs and puppies.

The area is fenced in, so escape risks are eliminated.

Kucera emphasized all swimmers must have current vaccination records for bordetella, rabies and distemper for admittance.

Advance registration at Diggity Dog Daycare, 2926 Airport Road, is recommended, but owners can register at the event. Food and refreshments will be available for owners and canine ice cream and fresh water for pets also will be on hand.

One dog owner told Kucera during last year’s event that it was the best day of her dog’s life, he said.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Kucera said.

" I won't buy a dog license in Lacrosse, it isn't the price, it's the fact that Lacrosse does nothing for dogs. There is one tiny little dog park smaller than my yard and that's it. I can't even legally take him to a city park. When I get a rabies shot for my dog the vet sends a letter to the county about but I have never once been contacted about not having a license. "

" Sounds good KBG the next time my kid jumps a fence and chews a hole in the cable guy's stomach or takes a crap in your yard and I don't clean it up, then you can start comparing my kids to your land sharks. Until then give it a rest. "

" Not all dog owners are irresponsible. I carry small bags with me whenever I am out with my dog so I can clean up behind him. It makes me mad when dog owners do not clean up behind their dogs because then it gives people such as "Just Some dude" the ammunition to stereotype us all. "

Yeah as opposed to your kid's snotty nose and not covering their mouth when they cough? Kids at that park are no different then dogs, their "owners" don't take responsibilty for them either. "

" I am glad Myric has a no dogs allowed policy, I have seen how dog owners pick up after their dogs.......or lack of picking up after thier dog. When my kids are at the pak, I don't want to have to lean dog feces off of them when they are done. "

" I wish lacrosse would do something like this, you can't even (legally) take your dog into a park in lacrosse. I always find it ironic that at the enterance to Myric Park there is a goofy metal statue of a person walking a dog. Was that statue placed in the park before or after the ban on dogs? "
