Myrtle Mabel Witte
ETTRICK, Wis. — Myrtle M. Witte, 92, of Ettrick passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at her home.
She was born Nov. 1, 1915, in Gills Coulee, Wis., (near West Salem, Wis.) to Sever and Millie (Torgerson) Simenson. On Sept. 4, 1935, Myrtle married Kenneth N. Witte at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem. Together they farmed for 40 years starting in Bells Coulee and moving to Red School Valley, Wis., (near Melrose, Wis.) in 1947. Myrtle and Ken were 4-H leaders for 20 years, active in the Jackson County Farm Bureau, and the South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ruth Circle. Besides being a farmwife, Myrtle worked as a baker for the Melrose-Mindoro school district for several years. The tantalizing smell of bread baking filled the school hallways on many afternoons. Students and teachers lucky enough to have been there when she was on staff still speak of her fabulous sweet rolls. In her retirement years, Myrtle was never idle. This was evident by the many baked goods she always had on hand when family or friends came to visit. She enjoyed her family, especially the little ones. The grandchildren will always remember visits to grandma’s house. In addition to lots of kisses and hugs, Myrtle always had special treats for them. Family members received special gifts of pieced quilts and crocheted items throughout the years. Myrtle’s favorite quilt pattern was the “log cabin” design. She started with a red square in the center to symbolize the heart or the warmth of the home.
Survivors include a daughter, Rose (DeLayne) Rand of Ettrick; a son, David (Doris) Witte of West Salem; seven grandchildren, Timothy (Sharon) Rand of Ettrick, Tracey Grinde of Melrose, Bradley Rand of Rochester, Minn., Rachel (Jeffrey) Hanson of Lake Elmo, Minn., Caroline Carrie (Peg Wojchik) of Appleton, Wis., David Kent Witte of Independence, Wis., and Kristi Witte (Becky Hole) of Yuma, Ariz.; also two step-grandchildren, Robin Cornford of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Jacquie Jacque of Reedsburg, Wis. Myrtle had sixteen great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Ruth Wojcik of Frederick, Md., Eunice (Marshall) Van Loon of Biloxi, Miss., Nita Witte of Holmen, Wis.; and a brother-in-law, Rev. Marvin (Ardis) Witte of Rochester.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; brothers, Clarence (Eunice), Milo, an infant brother, and Lloyd Simenson; a niece, Bonnie Hemker; and brothers-in-law, Robert Wojcik, Harrison (Genevieve) Witte, and Sherman Witte.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, W16679 CTH D, Ettrick. Rev. John Ashland will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of services, both at South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church.
