District's summer food program serves more than 30,000 meals

.
The La Crosse School District served 4,300 more free breakfasts and lunches this summer than last, a school nutrition official said Monday.

The 12 sites that qualified for the federally funded Summer Food Service served 30,770 meals June 9 through Aug. 15, said Angie Seeger, school nutrition specialist. The meals are served to anyone 18 and younger who shows up at a meal site.
There were 26,432 meals served during the summer of 2007.

The school nutrition office’s goal was to serve 30,000 meals, but Seeger said the final tally means there are still kids who aren’t being reached.

“There are still some existing pockets that we don’t serve,” she said.

District officials have tried to identify meal sites that will reach the maximum number of children but are limited in their choices, Seeger said.

A school site has to have at least 50 percent of its students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, while a community site must have census data that shows it is economically challenged.

This year, several of La Crosse’s elementary, middle and high schools were utilized for the program as were community locations.

Shelly Abraham, summer food service manager, helped coordinate the program.

" some of you people make me sick! these are children. How can anyone turn a hungary child away. "

" Just another government program to create dependency on government. This creates a dependent class of voters who will vote big government liberal democrats into office in order to continue expanding the "free" program and creating more new additional "free" programs to make even more dependent voters. This way, the government can step in and solve the problem that government itself created in the first place. A society that can vote itself money is a society doomed. Say goodbye to your hard earned money, to your liberty and freedom and hello to a socialist nanny state. "

" While I agree with only having the children you can afford, I do not see why people on here feel it's so horrible to feed kids. Some make the point that every kid, even those with parents who have the means can eat, do any? I highly doubt it, I know going up I never bothered to go to school to eat, we ate at home, clearly if these children are going to school to eat, there parent do not have the means. With all the money this city, and country p*sses away on either new carpet for the mayors office, another TIF district, a war, or bailing out private financial firms. I'm sorry, feeding some poor children just doesn't really draw my ire. Think before you write, if you wouldn't say it to folks on here in person, don't say it online. "

" I don't like to see poor kids go hungry - that is not the point of my sarcasm. I do however CRINGE at the government taking over basic, fundamental responsibilities of the family. Look at what a fantastic job the government has done with the inner city black family, for instance, by trying to "provide" what they lacked. These programs do NOT HELP poor families, they perpetuate poverty by making it easier and easier to stay that way. "

" How many more "programs" would you like to see, Michella, to feed poor kids? Isn't it enough that they receive food aid, free breakfasts and lunches through school, etc. etc.? I guess that's not enough, we should provide free snacks and dinner as well. What about weekends? Is there a tent set up somewhere - your back yard perhaps - free vittles on Saturday and Sunday - just show up! "

" re: MichellaBella

To answer your first question, no I was not brought up in a Leave it to Beaver household.

Maybe you should take the time to READ the article. The taxpayers are feeding ANY child who shows up poor or not. In my opinion, it's not the taxpayers RESPONSIBILITY to feed kids who have parents who choose to NEGLECT their kids when they have the finacial means to feed them. In my opinion we have enabled this poor parental behavior with programs such as these and this behavior will continue because of people like YOU. "

" You must all have had nice childhoods with two parents and a mommy who stayed at home and made your lunch everyday. we aren't living in a perfect world, people. unfortunately, this is the only way some kids get a real meal, especially when school isn't in session. kids should have an opportunity to EAT regardless of their parents' difficulties. People like you certainly aren't going to help them voluntarily. Survival of the Richest! "

" This is the type of situation that is created by the "it takes a village crowd". How ever if you own a pet and don't feed it then by god what a horrible person you are. We are raising a generation of children who have no idea what self sufficiency or personal responsiblity is. These
safety nets should be used as a short term bridge not a way of life for generation after generation. "

" I don't really feel like cooking supper tonight for my family. Isn't there somewhere we they can just "show up" and someone else will feed them? "

happymom wrote on Aug 26, 2008 9:48 AM:

" I have to agree with the previous comments. Who needs a family with a mom and a dad and a kitchen table when hungry tummies can be fed by The School District and by yet another Great and Benevolent Government program, paid for by guess whom? "

The simple answer to your question is yes. "

enuffalready wrote on Aug 26, 2008 8:13 AM:

" I really struggle with these types of programs. Since when did it become the responsibility of the school districts to feed our children year round? Another way for the schools to entwine their fingers into our lives when it isn't needed. Go figure. "

MichellaBella wrote on Aug 26, 2008 7:36 AM:

" Too late now, Krusty. Does that mean kids should go hungry? Not their fault their parents didn't plan accordingly. I'll gladly have my tax money go towards feeding poor kids as opposed to a new La Crosse sign or the Iraq War. "

Darwin wrote on Aug 26, 2008 7:27 AM:

" I have to agree with Krusty. I am happy to pay for schools, teachers, police cars, firemen... but I am tired of making your kids' lunches. "

" Are these kids all orphans or do they have parents who don't feed them?hat are the qualifications to eat for "free" on the taxpayers dime? The biggest question I have is, IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO FEED YOUR CHILDREN, WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO HAVE THEM??? "
