For Stop Light Day, members dress in green if they’re single, red if taken and yellow if “somewhat taken but not off the market.”
At Monday’s practice, the first day of camp, McCracken and Klug wore red among a sea of green shirts on Coate Field.
UW-L sophomore Sarah Butterfield, decked in green, calls herself “a product of band love,” as her parents met as UW-L marching band members years ago.
But marching band practice is about much more than the chance for romance.
Every day of the week-long camp has a theme, to help students let loose, get to know one another and enjoy themselves, said band director Tammy Fisher.
“Part of the marching band’s role is to be fun and entertain,” she said.
It also lightens up a hard week of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily practices, said Fisher.
“It is hard work but not unbearable,” said Amanda Groshek, now a UW-L junior entering her third year in the band. “It is fun, too. You learn and meet new people. I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall.”
