La Crosse man attacked, robbed while riding bicycle

.
A 29-year-old La Crosse man told police he was attacked and robbed early Saturday.

The man was riding home on his bike on the sidewalk of the 1100 block of Liberty Street about 1:30 a.m. when a man yelled at him, according to La Crosse police reports. The victim turned around and was punched in the face.
He fell off his bike and the attacker grabbed his wallet and removed $80, according to reports. He called 911 once the man fled.

The victim had injuries to his right leg from falling off the bike but did not receive medical attention.

Police have a suspect, but no arrests have been made.

" A few of you vengeful posters out there seem to suggest the death penalty for this crime. Yes, it would be wonderful if we all carried guns, wouldn't it? How delightful to walk down the street or go to the park with our children and not have to worry about what is right around the corner... Hmmm. OnaRes-- you need some serious anger management, dude! "

" Sconni Fan what do you mean...surrounding community? it is, it's Lacrosse. Sure this guy is a dirtbag, he should be taken out behind the woodshed and taught a lesson with a chunk of hot lead. "

" Phil, they already have a suspect. There's no need to find any "pond scum." The reason people asks for descriptions of people on these blogs is so they have a reason to spout off about all of the "Chicago" people ruining our city. I don't know how they can tell what city someone is from through a physical decsription, but it seems like the conversation ends when the criminal turns out to be white. "

" Its not just La Crosse, but our world has truly become a much more violent place. There ar too many young 'gangsta wannabees', commiting violent & petty crimes such as this.
I see it all the time, with having a teenage daughter myself, alot of her 'male' friends' are exactly like this. They wouldnt think twice about jumping someone if it meant any easy theft for them. I dont know if any of them actually carru guns or not, but most do carry large knives, and I have seen them standing on my block, in a group, carring baseball bats & paddlelocks wrapped in socks.
I knew these kids so I made them leave, but its still not a safe time to be doing anything alone at night around here anymore. Its a sad thing. "

" OnaRes, Freespeech, ML....Nothing on this? This guy doesn't qualify as a dirtbag? I suppose if this were in a surrounding community you guys would be all over it. "

" 2nd Amendment rights have gone to hell in Wisconsin. When I was in grade school and early high school,I regularly carried a cased shotgun with about 30 rounds in my pocket to get to my boat at Chuts and go duck hunting. No one batted an eye.South Dakota, you can throw an uncased shotgun on your dashboard loaded except for a shell cant be in the chamber to the grocery store and no bats an eye either. We also had cased guns in our trunk in high school, do it now !He should of picked up his bike and tHrew it on their heads "

" My point being with my example is that once you introduce a gun into a situation, anything is possible including the death of innocent people. My other point is that with everyone carrying a gun the punishment for all crime could be the death penalty. For this simple assult and batery case, the courts would sentence him, but with a person carrying a gun, they get to decide the punishment. Before the personal attacks start, I own a couple of guns. I kill things. I clean and gut them and eat them. "

Double A wrote on Aug 26, 2008 9:42 AM:

" I agree with you quay. I had a similar assault happen to me years ago. I was riding my bike and was approached by a young man. I stopped and he punched me in the face without provocation or words of any kind. I ran. I was treated. The assailant was ticketed, eventually. Now, I am familiar and comfortable with guns. Hunters safety, shooting ranges, handguns ...I'm pretty good. But I do not believe it would have been safe for me to be carrying during that incident. It was a panic situation. You have to be highly trained in order to deal with a situation like that calmly. "

seabiscuit wrote on Aug 26, 2008 9:40 AM:

" I totally agree with quay. How does letting everyone own a gun for individual safety lead to societal protection? It's ridiculous-- do people ever think before proposing ideas like that?! Can you ever see beyond the moment? It is NEVER just black and white; never a SIMPLE fix. I would also agree with rfield-- keep going and don't look back. Some situations call for such actions. "

quay wrote on Aug 26, 2008 9:27 AM:

" I don't get this desire to arm everyone. I live in a world of stupid people. There are stupid drivers, parents and bicyclist The idea that with along with the responsiblity of gun ownership their judgment increases is laughable.
gun activist see the victim here , shooting and killing a person who punched this guy in the face. I see him shooting and missing the assailant, hitting a passing motorist who then slams into a house with his car, killing a new born baby sleeping in its crib. "

Phil wrote on Aug 26, 2008 9:03 AM:

" To dullard: You are definetley what your name says. Descriptions are used so the public can help find this piece of pond scum. get a clue!!! "

rfield wrote on Aug 26, 2008 8:05 AM:

" Krusty - from the brief description here it sounds like a concealed weapon wouldn't have helped. He would have had to have his gun pulled to protect himself since he turned around and got punched in the face right away.

I'm not blaming the victim here, but for others in this situation if someone yells at you when you're riding your bike at 1:30AM - keep riding, don't turn around. Keep safe! "

dullard wrote on Aug 26, 2008 7:59 AM:

" I wonder why Krusty wants a description when they already have a suspect. Could it be to reinforce his belief that violent crimes are only committed by people that don't look like "his people."
Love Lax, I don't know where you get that from, but I don't think the police would have a suspect if it never happened. I kind of see how it can seem fishy that he has no injuries to his face when that is where he got punched, but punches to the face often don't leave marks. "

love lax wrote on Aug 26, 2008 7:52 AM:

" No description, because the guy is not telling the truth. It never happened is my vote. "

dbl lung wrote on Aug 26, 2008 2:15 AM:

" The real beauty of this story is it is only 2 blocks from the new womens jail alternative housing. "

Krusty wrote on Aug 26, 2008 1:25 AM:

" No description of the subject? I guess we wouldn't want to offend anyone. I would also like to thank Gov. doyle and jennifer schilling for ensuring that we can't legally protect ourselves with a concealed weapon. Doesn't seem like the police protected this guy that much did they? "
