" I have absolutely no idea of the facts of the cause of this particular accident. Someone was in the wrong place, or failed to yield right-of-way.
But this intersection, in common with many others, has taught me that "Red is the new yellow" -- people will dash out and turn left against the red arrow to avoid having to wait through another change of lights. A former co-worker was stopped and fined for running the red at this very intersection in his van, and actually said that the light had just changed, so he thought it was OK that he ran it, and he was quite incensed about his ticket.
I have seen many near-collisions at this intersection, and have routinely seen my right-of-way violated at this and similar intersections. "

" To river:
I was born in Winona, and have spent my entire life going through that intersection to visit my great aunt who lived behind sugarloaf. There is NOTHING wrong with that intersection. It's the lack of paying attention by drivers that's wrong. It's really sad when people like you try to blame the way a road is built for accidents caused by unattentive individuals. Just sit at the gas station and watch sometime........ "

" I used to live in Winona. It is very bad intersection. People do need to be very careful when going through the intersection, I know I do. I have seen way too many accidents there. Thoughts and prayer go out to the womens family. "

" Ok Seabicuit I admit I didn't show much compassion toward the real victims in this accident. It is sad and tragic that these people were injured, and that the family of the deceased woman will live without their loved one. No more needs to be said. "

" Greenlite-- How dare you bring YOUR political agenda into this. You apparently see only what will benefit YOUR arguement. There are comments on this blog that blame both sides-- the younger driver as well as the older driver. We don't know the details of "why" this happened. One person is dead and the other will have to live with that. End of story. My heart goes out to these people. Greenlite, go away. "

" Newworldorder: You are as scarry as Big "O". Wet behind the ears, little experience in life, and you think only of yourself and your agenda. So, What you're saying is people who are really important are busy, and can't afford to slow down and wait for seniors who drive? This is an elitist arrogant attitude. "

" NWO all I can say is WOW!! Just because they were seniors you blame the accident on the older people. I think you should remember this when your 75 and someone takes your freedom away from you...and yes driving is freedom for these people. Take away their drivers license and you do take away their freedom. Take a pill and wait for the facts The younger girl COULD have been on her phone who knows..this is why these things are called accidents by the way!!!! "

" I can't imagine losing a family member in a traffic accident. It's so sudden. Here one minute, gone the next. But I look at the ages involved and can't understand why a 79 year old woman is driving, period! That's the cause of accident. In La Crosse, we have old people who consistently drive as if it were 1959 or something. They go slow, and then they go even slower. I've seen them do dumber things than any 16 year old driver. Well, today there are alot more people on the road and many of us need to get to where we're going. Old people, stay out of the way or off the roads entirely! It's safer that way for us all. "

" If I remember this intersection correctly, it may not have been a case of "running a red," so much as a case of "failure to yield the right of way." Perhaps one should wait until more facts are released before making a snap judgement? You may be correct in your assumptions, but you may also be way off the mark. "

" I'll bet this 20-year old was either running a red light or talking on a cell phone when this accident happened. Everyone is always in such a hurry, they just can't wait that extra minute. And the cell phone issue while you're driving.....don't even get me started on that. "
