First impressions of La Crosse: Mostly positive; some suggestions

.
Sometimes it takes the impressions of outsiders to remind us of positive aspects of our community. And, sometimes too it takes those same impressions to remind us of things that we need to work on.

So it was with First Impressions report by eight residents of Oshkosh.
The report had glowing accounts of the physical beauty of our area — including Riverside Park — and it included positive impressions of downtown La Crosse and city neighborhoods.

The visitors also noted the importance of having downtown as a neighborhood as well as a business, government and entertainment center.

But there was a downside. The number of billboards was noted, and some of the visitors believed that they detracted from the natural beauty of the area, and from the ambience of the historic downtown.

And there was litter downtown, and a lack of newer housing in many neighborhoods. Some visitors wondered if La Crosse was taking advantage of upper stories of downtown buildings by putting apartments up there.

But most of the reaction was positive. Consider this comment about downtown: “I commend the city of La Crosse for its support of mixed-use and urban living apartments in the downtown area.”

That same comment continued on the topic of neighborhoods in general: “I believe the city of La Crosse has realized the importance of strong neighborhoods and that a tax base can be maintained if there is pride in the neighborhoods and that quality housing stock is maintained. The city needs to take care with its zoning and design standards for multiple housing units and ensure that their presence is an addition to a neighborhood, not a detriment.”

Most of the comments were along those lines — considerable praise for the city, but also some pointed suggestions for improvement.

The First Impressions program was a good way to understand how outsiders see the city, and some of the areas that need improvement.

Now, let’s get to work.

" I have a suggestion for La Crosse: quit being so touchy-feely about stuff. Quit arguing endlessly about roads, power lines, ect. and just DO IT. You want growth in the city? Lower taxes. You want more people to go downtown and to the university? Then widen La Crosse St. so it's easier to get someplace down there. And, I suppose it's too late to change the plans for the new Myrick Park zoo thing, but for crying out loud DON'T charge to go there. "

" Here is a suggestion to improve the area. Get rid of those hideous heron statues that are all over the city. You can not turn around downtown without seeing these monsterous freaks of nature. Alright already everyone as contributed to the Pump House we get it, now get rid of the evidence. "

" wiseup - of course they're not "obligated to do so". But if they did, the government would not need to so readily. Cooperation just does not exist because people label it socialistic or communistic and images of brutality and control arise. "

" Just because the government builds/buys homes and gives them away does not mean the average landlord is obligated to do likewise. Have you ever been to Madison or anywhere outside of LaX? I didn't think so. Too many idiots expect the government to solve their problems and they vote for the BIGGEST LIAR~ the one that PROMISES THE MOST! "

" I would say that the #1 problem that the city of La Crosse faces is the lack of growing industry. The city is slowly but surely dying, as higher-paying industries are either going elsewhere or folding. The majority of new jobs now are the mediocre McJobs. We have plenty of Kwik Trips, pizza joints, and express "health care" shops popping up everywhere. Outside of Trane and a few other industries, does La Crosse actually "produce" anything anymore? "

As I said previously, no one is stopping you from being the man to do that. Just pony up the cash and get it done!!!!! "

" LAX:

Actually Louise was not criticizing the fact that Senator Biden has one house, or ten for that matter. She was pointing out the fact that the Democrats are trying to portrait Mr. Biden as middle class, when in fact, he is far from it.

By the way, if Senator Barama is the man of change as everyone seems to profess, why do we have all of the "old guard" Democrats speaking at the Convention? Seems like the same ole, same ole to me. I'm not necessarily saying that's bad, just makes me wonder, that's all. "

" Why else would someone own rental property than to make money off it?: Someone may own rental property to contribute to society, putting much of the rent back into caring for the property, with a contingency on renter treatment of the property. Oh wait, that would be a waste of time! No money, no interest, eh Krust? "

" Sheesh! Some of you obviously haven't read the report and certainly don't know how to take some honest criticism. The La Crosse contingent was equally direct in their assessments of Oshkosh. Go to http://www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us/First_Impression_Final_Oshkosh.pdf "

" I'm not stupid or ignorant and I have a fantastic job Krust of the Earth. Is it not possible to create better housing opportunities? I suppose not in your one-dimensional American Dream mindset: Gotta make money money money! I'm not categorizing all landlords, either. Just trying to think out of a paradigm which I find illogical. "

" The one thing about La Crosse that has hurt it, yet kept it going, is the shift from manufacturing and production to service related trades. Places like the rubbermills and trane should be booming here, but cheap owners/share holders don't consider the impact of these types of businesses leaving a neighborhood. Hopefully dt La Crosse will get a facelift and become more residential. "

LAX wrote on Aug 27, 2008 12:34 PM:

" Louise Rifkin is apparently the one who thinks success is a bad thing, "Enuffalready," since she criticizes Joe Biden today for having even one house -- but apparently its okay for McCain to have seven houses. I don't care if McCain has 70 houses, but it demonstrates how out of touch he is with the common people. Furthermore, he doesn't even know how many houses he has...he's just plain out of touch period! No way, no how, NO MCAIN! By the way, can you spell KEATING 5? "

seekthetruth wrote on Aug 27, 2008 11:37 AM:

" La Crosse might have its problems, but this is still one of the best places to call home. And not all landlords charge as much as they can, only the greedy ones who see people as a "profit" only business. Many landlords do take care of their property they rent to others, not all are slum lords. Some do respect their tenants beyond their possible profit potential "

enuffalready wrote on Aug 27, 2008 9:40 AM:

" So LAX you make it sound like working hard, making a success out of your life, and becoming wealthy is a bad thing. I happen to believe that it's a GOOD thing. I hope that my hard work pays off in the same way. "

LAX wrote on Aug 27, 2008 9:23 AM:

" Speaking of housing -- somebody should ask Louise Riffkin how many homes McCain owns. Apparently it is so many that even McCain doesn't know -- or maybe he's just too senile to know.

Looking forward to seeing the McCain/Bush twins in the Twin Cities! No way, no how, no McCain! "

" Duoble A: Are you stupid or just plain ignorant?? Why else would someone one "rental" property unless they planned on making money with it?? Do you know how capitalism works? Maybe after you grow up and get a job you can buy some rental property to give away. "

enuffalready wrote on Aug 27, 2008 8:38 AM:

" By the way Double A, if you want to change the system, nothing is stopping you from ponying up some cash and buying a large piece of rental property and subsidizing the tenants rent with cash out of your pocket!! "

" To: Double A

"the only 'landlords' that I know of consider their property a way to make money". Well, duh. They're not in it for the glamour and fun. "

Double A wrote on Aug 27, 2008 8:25 AM:

" This article got me thinking about affordable, clean housing. You see, the only 'landlords' I know of consider their property a way to make money. That means they will charge as much as possible. So: People who rent are often struggling to make ends meet; And; landlords are often trying to squeeze as much $$ as possible out of the renters. Doesn't make good sense to me. But I guess if you try to make changes you'll be labeled a communist or a socialist or something by the right-wing capitalist contingency in all it's greenback-ridden glory. "

" If I remember correctly, this same group criticized the Tribune's online comment policy.

They said that when they went to the local newspaper's website to begin to get to know La Crosse, they were initially fearful that the people of La Crosse were as ignorant, xenophobic, and uneducated as those who regularly comment on these articles. They said they were pleased to find that the people of La Crosse are not as backwards as the so called "bloggers", and suggested maybe some changes were in order.

What do you think Tribune? Time to put the comments on a separate page from the peer reviewed, edited, and spell-checked articles you work to publish? "
