Gow earned a hearty round of applause when he announced he and his wife, Betsy Valentine, pledged $30,000 to the building, which he calls “the heart of our academic mission.”
Another challenge, Gow said, is the university’s failure to be competitive with faculty and staff salaries, said Gow.
“We are going to keep trying to do better on compensation — that is probably the single largest issue we face as a system,” Gow said.
Despite early concerns about how UW-L would fare with a $485,000 cut in state funding for the 2008-09 budget, Gow said, UW-L came out OK because the UW System agreed to pay the tuition expenses of veterans and also allowed the university to keep more tuition revenue as a result of several years of strong enrollment.
