Johnson, Huebsch ahead in campaign fundraising

.
Tara Johnson has the edge in campaign contributions in the race for the 32nd District Senate seat, collecting 80 percent more in the first six months of 2008 than incumbent Repub-lican Sen. Dan Kapanke.

According to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, in the first six months of 2008, Johnson, a Democrat from the town of Shelby, raised $67,381 while Kapanke raised $37,415. Kapanke, who lives in the town of Campbell, has more cash on hand, $113,645 compared with Johnson’s $55,753.
Despite the lopsided 2008 numbers, Kapanke is comfortable with where he is.

“I hope this race is more about issues and philosophy instead of how much money is being thrown at an election race,” Kapanke said.

He said he has had only two fundraisers in the past two years because of needs in the district.

“Starting in August of last year with the flooding and in June of this year with more flooding, taking care of those issues has taken up a lot of my time,” Kapanke said. “For me to go out fundraising when there’s work to do doesn’t seem appropriate.”

“I’m very glad he’s out there doing that work,” Johnson said. “I’d be very disappointed in him if he wasn’t. I still think it’s very fair to enjoy my numbers. I think it’s pretty amazing the (amount of) money raised in contrast to the incumbent.

94th Assembly District

Rep. Mike Huebsch, a Republican from West Salem, has raised $50,246, nearly three times as much as Democratic challenger Cheryl Hancock’s $17,553 in the first six months of 2008.

However, the Assembly speaker seems to be spending his cash faster.

From January 2007 through June 2008, Huebsch spent more than he raised. During that period, he raised $150,693 and spent $154,419. Hancock raised $17,553 and spent $867.

Huebsch’s account balance June 30 was $28,614, $11,928 more than Hancock’s $16,686.

Hancock said her campaign is almost halfway toward achieving its fundraising goal.

“When I first started, I said, ‘We’re not raising money. We’re raising people.’ I’m talking to as many people as I can, raising their interests, their efforts and their willingness to step forward,” Hancock said.

Hancock interprets the spending numbers to mean Huebsch, the speaker of the Assembly, is spending his time and money campaigning for other candidates outside his district.

Huebsch said he pays close attention to his district.

“I have been out there. I can’t emphasize enough that whether or not I attend a certain event is not going to determine if I get re-elected. It’s whether or not you did the job between the elections that determines success,” Huebsch said.

" Hmm, I am pretty sure I read an article the other day that property taxes in Holmen are going down this year. Looks like Hancock is just raising taxes all over the place. That doesn't make any sence. "

" To: Tax-me-more

I was NOT implying that they pay a 46% income tax rate. How you got THAT out of my statement, I can't even guess.

What I stated was that those that make more than $100,000 a year pay total income taxes that comprise 46.7% of all income tax revenue collected by the state, yet they only comprise 8% of the total returns submitted. So they are MORE than paying their fair share.(And the fair share of those that make much less money.) "

not quite right

You twist the facts to suit you. You imply the wealthy pay 46% tax, but they DO NOT!

The wealthy actually pay SIGNIFICANTLY LESS in SS tax. Under 98K, we all pay 6%, after the first 98K, the wealthy STOP paying SS tax.

This is just one example of how the little guy pays a larger percentage of his income to the government. "

" Ryeguy:

To echo what Big E said, you are either not very intelligent, or blindly look away from the facts. During 2006 in Wisconsin, individual wage earners with income above $100,000 accounted for 8.6% of total returns, but paid 46.7% of all income taxes in the state.

Now I'll ask you, who is it that's NOT paying their fair share? Obviously the rich are, unlike you stated in your rant. "

Big E wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:35 PM:

" Re. ryeguy. Your comments on the rich and taxes are so ignorant it's pathetic. Perhaps you should study up on the tax codes before you make such stupid comments. "

" Come on Tribune, where,s the beef? Everyone should visit http://johnsonwatch08.blogspot.com/ which says that Padesky-Johnson recieved $17,000 from out of state donors, $27,000 from individuals who do not live in district 32, and $56,000 from various PACS. Perhaps the Trib could put comrade cub reporter , Samantha Marcus, on the trail. Padesky-Johnson has never answered how many county electrical contracts have been awarded to her husbands company during her term. "

CounterPoint wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:46 AM:

" Considering the district gets paid on a per student basis from the state, more students does mean more cost, but it also means more revenue. Also, Holmen is very quickly growing, meaning the tax base is getting bigger all the time. So between those two facts, there is no reason school taxes should go up significantly. And actually, Holmen school taxes have not gone up a whole lot in the past several years, but they are quite high to begin with. And Ryeguy, the wealthy do pay a lot more in taxes than the middle class. Wisconsin Government is spending run amuck, which is why taxes go up. What are we now...5th highest taxed state in the US? "

Anna Banana wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:08 AM:

" All I know is something needs to be done, are you telling me that you are better off since Mike H was elected. And as for Hancock having to raise taxes, that is the state legislators way of pointing the finger elsewhere when they should have been looking at others ways to fund schools. Holmen is a growing school district of course they have to raise taxes, there are more students to educate EVERY year. If people in HOlmen aren't happy with her leadership tell me why she keeps getting re-elcted. "

just the facts wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:48 AM:

" WHERE IS JOHNSONS MONEY COMING FROM? As usual the Trib wants to manage the news and selectivly print it! How muuh is coming from out of the district? If the story was only about Huebsch and Kapanke, we surely would be told. Yes indeed, visit the afore mentioned web site and find out for yourself. Yellow journalism? You bet! "

Johnson Watch wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:37 AM:

" Now Hancock. She has overseen HUGE levy increases for the Holmen school district each year. Knowing full well many people couldn't afford those taxes she approved them anyway. Look at Hancock's record, we couldn't find a single instance of her voting against HIGHER TAXES. "

" Let's take them one at a time. Johnson, IGNORED her constituents, not once but TWICE when she voted a resounding YES to having inmates (CRIMINALS) live in residential neighborhoods.

Go to http://johnsonwatch08.blogspot.com/ and see exactly where all that money is coming from. "

ryeguy wrote on Aug 28, 2008 6:32 AM:

" Mike H is probably spreading his cash around the state to other races, feeling pretty flush and comfortable in the conservative Christian bastion of West Salem and Holmen. I wonder if folks who contribute to "Mike" know where their money is really going and how badly his policies are hurting the towns and counties he serves. Property taxes aren't going up this fast for the fun of it - it is because the wealthy are not paying their fair share of the income tax due to the policies of Mike H and his cronies. "

" Dan Kapanke is a real person with real world experience. He has voted in a non partisan manner in many issues. It is embarrassing when the Democrats say they are out to get him because he is not a democrat. We owe it to him to support him he has not played politics with our representation. "
