Foundation links young leaders to nonprofits

.
Young leaders will have the opportunity to become engaged in their community through a new La Crosse Community Foundation club designed to help them develop relationships with nonprofit organizations, coordinators said Wednesday.

The First Fridays Club will meet monthly to connect with other leaders ages 40 and younger, learn about La Crosse area nonprofit organizations and talk about philanthropy, said Heather Quackenboss, La Crosse Community Foundation program director.
Its first meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Peaberry’s, 40 Copeland Ave.

“As young people, we have a lot of stuff on our plates ... and I think we want to do more,” Quackenboss said. “We have our own perspective of how things could be and should be done.”

La Crosse Community Foundation Executive Director Sheila Garrity said the club will also help interested people understand financial forms and look to become leaders in organizations.

To become a member, visit the updated La Crosse Community Foundation Web site at www.laxcommfoundation.com and click on the “First Fridays” link.

Members will agree to contribute $250 as a one-time contribution or over the course of a year, which is about $20 per month.

At the end of the year, members will make a grant recommendation for their $250 contribution, which will be matched dollar for dollar by a challenge grant. The qualified nonprofit agency of their choice will be awarded a $500 grant after final approval from the board of directors.
