Pastor can't resist: Brett, the Jets and God

.
WAUPUN, Wis. — The Rev. Jon Mahlstedt couldn't pass up the opportunity to mix religion and football. Mahlstedt recently wrote his weekly saying on the sign at Waupun Assembly of God, where he serves the congregation's youth. His humorous message created an Internet sensation with its picture sent in countless e-mails, and cars often stopping to snap its photo.

Mahlstedt's message: "God will never leave you for the Jets!"

The lighthearted poke at Brett Favre has drawn considerable (and unexpected) attention to the Waupun church, located between Madison and Green Bay. Expected to be up one week, the message will remain for a third week through Saturday, when the church needs to promote its Bible class.

Church members hear from friends and family across the country who received the pictures of the sign in e-mail.

"It's been great. Most people have a sense of humor about it," says Mahlstedt, 23. "We thought it was kind of cool. We've had a few letters from people who wonder why we're dissing Brett or why we're comparing Brett to God."

Mahlstedt is a Green Bay Packers fan, but as a Colorado native also roots for the Denver Broncos.

" mind of (un) reason: chill out! The fact that it's "old news" has nothing to do with the humor in the creative sign. Lighten up and enjoy life in all its facets. "

" I love the Packers and I am a Favre fan. I got a giggle out of the sign. That's the kind of church I would want to attend. It's nice to have a pastor that's not all fire and brimstone. "

" Mind of reason did you even read the article?

"Expected to be up one week, the message will remain for a third week through Saturday,"

3 weeks ago = 8/7 which is one day after the trade. i would say his facts are pretty good... "

" Stubby you answered your own question, i'll break it down with algebra:

you wrote:
"MY OPINION - which to me means PERSONAL"

which would mean opinion = personal

you first wrote:
"Just my personal opinion"

since we know that opinion = personal from the other statement we can conclude that what you were saying here is "Just my personal personal" or "Just my opinion opinion" so what he is saying is that since Opinion = personal you don't have to say "personal opinion"

As for the sign now, I find it humorous and is in a way a marketing tool for that church. Who knows maybe someone out there who didn't attend church because they thought Christians were uptight saw this and decided to try it out because they seem more approachable, and he got saved...And isn't that the point of a church? "

mind of reason wrote on Aug 28, 2008 2:37 PM:

" Ignorant! It's old news pastor. The Packers have moved on and that is what they told Brett to do. This is a stupid sign trying to get peoples attention because maybe his sermons are as out of touch as his facts about football. "

" Jesus "retired" and came back on the third day. Brett retired and attempted to come back, but was thwarted. Jesus 1, Brett 0. "

" Thank you for clarifying that. Now, my opinion on this sign is just that, MY OPINION - which to me means PERSONAL. What did I miss here "

enuffalready wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:57 PM:

" Let me simplify this for you. You don't need to put the word personal in there! How's that? "

stubby wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:53 PM:

Would you explain what you just said! "

stubby wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:51 PM:

enuffalready wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:49 PM:

" Stubby:

Quit being redundant. It's not your personal opinion. If it's your opinion, it is, by its nature, personal.

P.S. I love the sign. Gotta like a preacher with a sense of humor. "

seabiscuit wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:43 PM:

" Stubby, do you mean "interprets?" "

seabiscuit wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:40 PM:

" Based on some of the creatures that inhabit this planet, I think God has a pretty good sense of humor. Nothing-- not even religion-- should be taken too seriously, after all. I think it's a great way to poke fun at Brett, his awesome career, and the fans who put him on a pedestal (including me!), while speaking of God's faith in us. Anyway, it makes several interesting points... I like this sign! "

stubby wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:36 PM:

" D.Ray
Theology has nothing to do with this. Just my personal opinion. Everyone interrupts humor differently! "

D. Ray wrote on Aug 28, 2008 1:22 PM:

" The sign is brilliant. I love when a church can find humor that is right on target and meaningful to the world today. Sorry Stubby, but there is no theological argument against this. Peace! "

stubby wrote on Aug 28, 2008 12:47 PM:

" Offended that it's a church! I don't need 4 walls to have my belief's, but as I stated, I find it very distasteful that a man of the cloth would publicly display this comment. If he wants to have fun with it during a service, that's one thing, but to display it on the church's sign...................that's all I have to say about it. As far as Brett being traded, I still support my packers, I just don't support TT or his choices. "

OnaRes wrote on Aug 28, 2008 12:37 PM:

" STUBBY, that sign is funny and for you to find it offensive is beyond me. Are you offended because it is a church or is it you are still heart broken over Favre being traded to the Jets? "

stubby wrote on Aug 28, 2008 12:20 PM:

" GrumpyOldMan

Ok, remark about the sign. Rude and very distasteful, especially for a church.....NOT FUNNY! "

GrumpyOldMan wrote on Aug 28, 2008 12:01 PM:

" Hey, you'r supposed to be commenting on the brillance of the sign and the spot-on theology it puts forth...not rehashing old arguments about "fired or retired" Brett Favre. Way to go, Pastor Jon. You ROCK!!! "

" packerbacker, just how do you know what was or is in the mind of Ted Thompson? Do you have any evidence to back up your claims? NO, you do not. All you have is irrational babbling and resentment. No one - I repeat, NO ONE - forced Favre into retirement. He retired of his own free will. The Packers even welcomed him back when he reconsidered, but then he flip-flopped AGAIN. How is that Thompson's fault? "

packerbacker wrote on Aug 28, 2008 10:01 AM:

" For the moment Ted Thompson became GM, he wanted Brett OUT! Brett was forced into premature retirement and Brett quickly changed his mind~ just like Don Hutson, Forrest Gregg,Reggie White, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and countless other sports stars! They were all welcomed back because their former teams KNEW the marketing potential and skill levels along with locker room motivation. TT WAS TOO BLIND TO SEE and now the team and their fans will SUFFER and the Jets got a $100,000,000 WINDFALL FOR A 4th round draft pick! I wish God would trade TT and BRING BRETT BACK! "

Sconny wrote on Aug 28, 2008 9:54 AM:

" Dear Lord,

Please allow Brett to forgive the Packers for booting him out of Green Bay. In your mysterious ways, please somehow arrange for Brett to come back and play for the Packers again....soon--before he retires. Amen.

Love, Sconny. "

" GoodListener, THANK YOU! These blog spots get so in an uproar about EVERYTHING! I'm rather sick of it, it sheds a poor light on the people of La Crosse, the Tribune, and people in general.

This was a good poking, funny sign. I'm one that sides w/ wanting Brett back, but this sign was hilarious. Hell, I'm not in the bit slightest even religious, but Thanks for the laugh! "

GoodListener wrote on Aug 28, 2008 8:06 AM:

" Chill people! It was just a clever sign to get attention ... and it succeeded! Clever! Funny! True enough too! "

Eddie wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:59 AM:

" stubby, you're right about one thing - Brett Favre did not leave the Packers for the Jets. That much is true. However, he left because he RETIRED. He booted himself out. He said that he didn't want the ball anymore. He was given more than one chance to unretire, and he refused every time. The Packer train then moved on - and rightfully so. No coach or general manager in his right mind would keep his team in limbo because one player can't make up his mind on playing. "

stubby wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:41 AM:

" The first time I saw this, I found no humor in it. I'm really awed that a church would consider this funny. Brett did not leave us for the Jets, he was booted out. Gee, I wonder if this is a church TT goes too!!!! "

diana wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:20 AM:

" Brett Favre went from a hero to a real live human. He should have stayed retired in the status he left with and all the money he gained from playing a game. "

Eddie wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:17 AM:

" Correction, conscience. Brett Favre retired. He said he wasn't sure if he wanted to play anymore. Then he kept changing his mind about retirement over and over again. He was NOT fully committed to playing football. That is the only reason why the Packers moved on. It was the Packers' duty to move on. Why should any team have "faith" in a guy who keeps changing his mind about playing? "
