TREMPEALEAU n A maintenance project is under way to remove sediment at two locations in Long Lake, a semi-isolated backwater of the Mississippi River Pool 7 near Trempealeau.
The lake also is part of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
The project focuses on a diversion channel that moves water through the lake, in addition to the removal of a sandbar that formed during the 2001 flood. About 100 cubic yards of material are expected to be dredged from the diversion channel and another 2,100 cubic yards from the lake. The material, mostly sand, is being trucked to an approved placement site near Lock and Dam 6.
Work began last week and is expected to be completed in early September.
Boaters will have access to the lake from the nearby boat landing during the construction period, but should use caution near construction sites. Motorists driving Lake Road also should be aware of heavy equipment operating along the road and increased truck traffic.
The project is being completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Maintenance and Repair Section based in Fountain City. Funding for the $65,000 project was provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
