Daniel Phillip Bakel
Daniel P. Bakel, 51, of La Crosse passed away at home on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, with his family and friends at his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Dan was born in Battle Creek, Mich., on Nov. 22, 1956, to Gordon Francis Bakel and M. Linda (Swanson-Bakel) Hyde. Most of his early years were spent in Lacon, Ill., where he graduated from Mid-County High School in 1974. Dan attended classes at Illinois Central College before leaving for Morrison Institute of Technology in Morrison, Ill., where he received an associate degree in mechanical design and drafting.
Dan met his lifelong friend and companion, Beth Breen, while working at a local restaurant in Lacon during his high school years. After college, Dan and Beth moved to La Crosse, where they were married on May 25, 1979. Dan found employment at Trane Co. in La Crosse and worked there for 29 years. During his employment with Trane, Dan attended Viterbo University, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in computer information systems management. Dan spent most of his career in various positions of information technology and had the opportunity to travel all over the world.
Dan will be remembered for his loyal devotion to his family; his work ethic and positive attitude; his mentoring spirit and investment in others, as well as the friendships he cherished. He touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Beth of La Crosse, he is survived by his daughter, Lindsey Bakel, and his son, Alex Bakel, both of La Crosse; his mother of San Antonio; a sister, Tama Bakel of San Antonio; three brothers, Tim Bakel of East Peoria, Ill., Andy Bakel of San Antonio and Blaine (Allyson) Bakel of San Antonio; his grandmother, Joanne Swanson of Rochester, Minn.; Uncle Jerry (Kris) Swanson of Rochester; his nephews, Josh, Jake, Hunter and Colton Bakel; and his extended family of in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Francis Bakel.
A Mass of Christian Burial honoring his life will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Roncalli Newman Center in La Crosse. The Rev. Mark Pierce will officiate. A memorial service with burial will be held in Lacon at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church on Saturday from noon until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Western Technical College Foundation for a scholarship fund in his honor, or Roncalli Newman Center Construction Fund. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Teresa Rose Francisco Hegge, 45, of Spring Grove died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at her home. Lauretta Jane (Dickman) Jahimiak
Lauretta Jane (Dickman) Jahimiak, 83, of La Crosse died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, in Winona, Minn., as a result of an automobile accident.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1924, in Duluth, Minn., to Mary (Puhr) Giguere. She graduated from Brainerd (Minn.) High School in 1942 and then attended Brainerd Junior College. Thereafter, she practiced medical technology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at Winona State University, where she met her future husband. On Aug. 12, 1950, she married Dr. Raymond John Jahimiak in La Crosse, and they celebrated 57 years of marriage while raising six children.
Lauretta is survived by five children, Jane (Cindy Conger) Jahimiak of Downers Grove, Ill., Steve (Sue) Jahimiak of La Crosse, Dr. Karen Jahimiak of Brookfield, Wis., Ellen (Brent) Smith of La Crosse and Laura (Jason) Hutzler of La Crosse; a son-in-law, Ken Simonson of Roseville, Minn.; grandchildren, Casey Conger, Joel (Emily) and Krista Jahimiak, Eric Schueler, Jennifer, Samantha and Joshua Alexander, Erin and Anna Smith, and Zachary and Abagail Hutzler; along with great-grandchild Cora Rae Jahimiak.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, on May 29, 2007; a daughter, Ann Simonson; and her mother, Mary Giguere.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. David Olson will officiate. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse, where a prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m., and again at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorials may be given to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hixon House, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Lois E. Johnson, 80, of Caledonia died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Shirley A. Levock
ONALASKA — Shirley A. Levock, 60, of Onalaska died on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born on June 21, 1948, in La Crosse to William and Martha (Schaefer) Butler. She married George Levock on Jan. 3, 1967, in La Crosse. Together they enjoyed camping. Shirley worked as a secretary for Home Apts. for about six years until she was unable to work due to health reasons. She enjoyed doing needlework and crocheting.
She is survived by a son, Shawn Levock of Onalaska; a sister, Donna Osthoff of Genoa; and a brother, Billy (Arlene) Butler of La Crosse. Nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, on Sept. 19, 2002; a sister; a brother; and her best friend, Lynette Jacobson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Sachs will officiate. Burial will be in Onalaska City Cemetery. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse today from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
