A supervisor noticed flames in the building about 2:25 a.m. while employees were on break at the 24-hour operation center at 501 Cliffhaven Drive, said Prairie du Chien Fire Chief Harry Remz.
The facility was full of smoke when fire crews arrived. The building’s sprinkler system contained the fire until firefighters extinguished it, Remz said. Fire officials did not know how long the fire had been burning before their arrival.
The blaze is believed to have started in an overhead rack of the metal structure. The building was evacuated, and no one was injured.
Apparel had fire, smoke and water damage, but the quantity of items ruined is not known, said Cabela’s spokesman Joe Arterburn.
“Our customers should not experience any negative effects,” Arterburn said.
Fire crews remained for about two hours. Cabela’s retail store building was not damaged.
Cabela’s is a supplier of fishing, hunting and outdoor gear and operates 29 locations in the United States and Canada, Arterburn said.
