Former Lao general visits Hmong center in La Crosse

.
Two security guards checked bags and padded down hundreds of visitors at the Hmong Cultural and Community Center on Thursday night.

The tight security was for a rare visit from Vang Pao, a former major general in the Royal Lao Army.
Pao was indicted on federal charges last year in an alleged conspiracy plot to overthrow the current Communist government in Laos.

Yet for many Hmong in La Crosse and across the state, the federal indictment has not dimmed their support for the man they view as the leader of their transplanted community in the U.S.

Hmong Mutual Assistance Association board member Mai Nhia Vue credits Pao’s work with the CIA decades ago with allowing people like her parents to flee Laos to the United States.

“I wouldn’t be here in this country if it weren’t for him,” she said.

A visit by Pao is akin to meeting Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, she said.

“It’s a big thing, especially when he doesn’t come out much,” Vue said, “and not to a small town, unless something big is happening.”

Pao has visited La Crosse five or six times before, said HMAA Executive Director Thai Vue.

He had an empty day in his schedule, so he decided to make the La Crosse stop, Thai Vue said. He will go on to Oshkosh, Wis., for Labor Day.

“He’s going to say anything he wants to say to us, because this is not a formal, political visit,” Thai Vue said. “He’s just coming home.”

The local Hmong quickly threw together a banquet — complete with a traditional Hmong blessing — after news of the visit came last week, Thai Vue said.

La Crosse Mayor Mark Johnsrud, who was invited by Thai Vue, said he’s glad Pao will get to see the city’s new Hmong cultural center.

He was also excited to meet the general himself. “It’s really an honor,” Johnsrud said.

" It's obvious that the vast majority of Hmong Americans will be voting for Obama. Here's why. The Republicans, especially the Bush Administration, for all their tough talks and promises to the Hmong about fighting rogue regimes (like the Communist Lao People's Democratic Republic) and advacing liberty...they have instead worked closely with the Lao PDR regime on their "war on terror" campaign, and used the Patriot Act to label the Hmong as "terrorists", and if that wasn't enough, they betrayed the Hmong community and America's staunchest anti-Communist ally, Gen. Vang Pao...by arresting, jailing, and now charging him in federal court for violations against America? McCain may be a war hero, but he was, and remains silent as the Republican Bush Justice Department pursues their case against Vang Pao. Hmong Americans need to wake up and think. This time, the don't continue to vote against your own self interests! "

" re:hello, Yes I do know where my home country is. The USA. I descend from the Chickasaw Tribe. I don't hate Hmongs. I just don't like aliens coming to this country and getting so much given to them. I know there are other immigrants coming in everyday, but why does our government have to give free medical, food housing, etc. Immigrants 40-50+ years ago came here with the clothes on their backs and had to work for everything they had. That was when we didn't have to press 1 for english. "

" The US CIA pay Hmong soldiers $3.00 a month to help US Secret War in Laos to block the Ho Chi Minh trail and save thousand of US Soldiers life during Vietnam War. General Vang Pao is a world hero fight communist and defense freedom and allied with the United State CIA Advisors very close as brother. Thanks for the US government brought him here in US so some his people has a chance to follow him to this great country, but some of his people left behind in the jungle of Laos and inside Laos continue sufer under Lao communist dictator regime. " I agree that this reporter and article were poorly written and slanted against Hmong people. If you ever took the time to talk/work with Hmong people, you would see they have same goals and interests as anyone else. Thanks Gunny for the true story and information. "

" nana3: if you haven't read any of Gunny's comments, you should try to take Gunny's "free" knowledge back to you and your home country...or do you even know where that is??? "

" nana3: OBVIOUSLY, you have the right to your opinion, and your opionin SUCKS. Talk about war, when you say something public like "You Hmong", it sounds like your starting a war yourself with lots of people who do not like HATERS like you. Good luck to you in life. "

" I still don't understand why some of you people think the hmong did the US a favor by fighting a war against communism for their freedom. That war did not benefit the US. That war took many young soldiers lives. The United States helped people in Vietnam and Laos to fight in the war.
You people ,hmongs, have received more government money than most US citizens will ever see. "

" Because of the plight of the Hmong refugees in the far east a sting was set up by offering some of Gen Pao's people weapons for his people fighting for their lives in Laos and Thialand by reps of our Gov. and then charges were brought against him. Before printing half a story, the Trib should check out the whole story. But it is easier to try and print anything bad than to find out the truth.
Because of Gen Pao and the Lao Vets, many Americans are alive today at the cost of 10 Hmongs for each American saved. We need to thank them instead of trying to down them.

" I had the honor to meet Gen Pao yesterday and also last night at the dinner held in his honor by the Hmong People. I wish more people from this city would have attended and seen what was in reality the love of a leader for his people and the love and respect of the Hmong People for Gen. Pao. I feel very sorry for the short minded reporter from the Trib and the leadership of the paper to print the article that they did. Instead of trying to show how much the Hmong have accomplished in a short period of time they try to build the prejudices of people against the Hmong.

Gunny wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:11 AM:

" Once again the Trib has shown its bias and prejudice in the article about General Pao. This is a man that has given his entire life to his people and if the kid for the Trib would have stayed to follow this up last night he would also have seen Gen Pao start an endowment for the Hmong Assoc and speak about helping the children understand their new way of life in the U.S. These are a people that fought for our country during Vietnam and were lied to by our Gov. and still came here on their own and support the U.S. very strongly.

" Wow, Vang Pao is a warrior and loves America. Barrack Obama and his wife openly hate America and all things American. Not much of a comparison at all! "

" I had the honor to have dinner with General Pao and the wonderful Hmong people. I can't believe you compared him to Barack Obama who has never serviced our country and who is not any kind of American hero. If you had to compare you could have at least compared him to John McCain who is a hero and who like General Pao has service our country in Vietnam. "
