Wisconsin Technical College System out of grants for low-income students

.
An estimated 4,000 low-income technical college students may get less aid this fall because the state has run out of grant money for them.

The state Higher Educational Aids Board stopped giving Wisconsin Higher Education Grants to students in the Wisconsin Technical College System on Aug. 21.
“We want to get the message out to legislators that this is an important issue for our students, and we hope the state will consider that as they prioritize their funding for the technical college system,” said Jerolyn Grandall, financial aid manager at Western Technical College.

This is the earliest point in the year Grandall has seen the money run out during her 17 years working at Western. Last year, she said, the money ran out by November. That left about 2,700 technical college students shut out and about 24,000 students receiving grants last year. Years ago they had funding up until the end of the school year, said Grandall.

She attributes the early dry up of funds to increased enrollment across the technical college system, increased tuition each year and increased need because of the economic downturn.

“If the economy is forcing people to feel like they need to come back to school, there needs to be financial assistance for them ... to give them the training for the job they would like to do,” she said.

Students applying after Aug. 21 are being put on a wait list, but the agency’s executive secretary Connie Hutchison says it’s unlikely they will get grants.

Time will tell how this will effect students, said Grandall.

“I hope this doesn’t discourage them from applying for aid because there are other things available like student loans and federal funding,” she said.

Grants for technical college students usually run about $430 to $1,100 per year.

Wisconsin Higher Education Grants still are available for University of Wisconsin System students.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

" Looking for someone to help with your educational expenses? Try the GI Bill. A little give/take, but an experience like none other! Regrettably, 20 years later, I wish I didn't opt out of the GI Bill - gotta pay my loans back just like everyone else. "

" Frank Z: Try working full-time, raising a family of three on your own, going to school full-time, already having a loan, and still not being able to make ends meet. Obviously you have no idea what it takes to make it when you have others depending on you ... and obviously you don't know what it takes to go to a technical college. It is every bit as demanding as a university. I've experienced both. "

" Why are college costs going up year after year? Look at all that unionized labor.. Start cutting payrolls and make education more affordable.

" Being in the low income bracket they should already get more loans then they need. Also technical school is a lot easier than a University, so you should be able to work more and not worry about studying as much. Try working full time, being in two clubs, an engineering major, and no grants or free money.... "

" It is ashame that there is a need for technically trained individuals in our state and those who are eligible for financial aid can't get it. When I see ALL the money wasted on the political campaign that could be used to fund higher education it makes me sick. Most students already work part time to pay for room and board and this grant money helps pay for their books. College costs are higher due to the decrease in state support. "

" Get a loan or get a job...your choice.
I worked 40+ hours a week while going to school full time (18+ credits per sememster)
Its called "making sacrafices for things you want"

I just don't get how people think they should just be entitled to free money for post secondary education. If you want the new career or a better paying job....WORK FOR IT! "
