David Wheat, 68, and his wife are invited guests of John McCain and will get an up-close view of the convention and stay at the same hotel as the nominee.
Wheat said that in 1967 he and McCain were held in the famous prison camp. He remembers using hand signals to communicate with McCain, who was in another building.
He remembers McCain as a guy who liked to have fun, and quipped that McCain didn't finish near the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy for nothing.
Wheat was taken prisoner in 1965 — two years before McCain — when his F-4 was shot down on his 80th mission.
