Local GOP leaders praise Palin pick

.
Local Republican and Democratic leaders responded Friday to a surprising pick for vice president that stole the news cycle from freshly minted Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

Most early Friday still were learning about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a Washington outsider whose experience led both camps’ talking points.
“Quite frankly, I don’t know that much about her because she’s been in office for such a short time,” said U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse.

Kind came out swinging against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain’s pick after quickly dispensing his thoughts from the Democratic National Convention at a press conference Friday in Riverside Park.

“They made a whole issue of Barack Obama’s lack of experience,” Kind noted, but McCain, who turned 72 on Friday, has selected a running mate with less than two years as governor to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

And by putting a woman on the ticket, Kind added, the Republicans are trying to drive a wedge between Obama backers and jilted supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton.

“They think there’s still a rift between the Obama and Clinton camps,” Kind said. “But if you support a Hillary Clinton candidacy, then you’re naturally going to support Barack Obama.”

Kind challenger and Eau Claire Republican Paul Stark met Palin a month ago during a tour of Alaska and said he was struck by the governor’s charm and intelligence.

“She just comes across as being a regular person,” said Stark, who like Palin favors a natural gas pipeline from the Alaskan north slope to Chicago.

State Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, admittedly was less familiar with the presumptive vice presidential nominee but said Friday her executive credentials would balance out the ticket.

“I knew her name as governor of Alaska and not much more about her,” Huebsch said. “But as far as experience is concerned, I think the governor brings a very valuable set of skills as well as good conservative values.”

Longtime RNC delegate Evelyn Pertzsch of Onalaska was consumed Friday by the news McCain had tapped a woman for his running mate.

“I am thrilled that he selected a woman,” Pertzsch said. “I’m proud of that campaign, that he was smart enough to pick a woman. She’ll get the young women voters.”

I don't believe for one minute that a person like that can connect with the average Joe in America. I also don't believe that it's just his judgment at question here. His age IS a factor for a job like his that is supposed to be the most important job in the world. Obama, twenty year's from NOW, a generation from NOW, will STILL be younger than what McCain is NOW. In any case, the argument that McCain is senile is laughable, and I doubt even you truly believe that. But it makes for a typical old-school personal attack that the dems are so eager to reject...or not. "
