Local schools named New Wisconsin Promise Schools

.
Two of La Crosse’s middle schools were among 182 named New Wisconsin Promise Schools of Recognition for the 2008-09 school year, according to information released Tuesday by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Logan and Lincoln Middle School received the recognition. It was the fourth consecutive year Lincoln Middle made the list.
“It is the work of teachers, parents, administrators, and other staff members at these schools that contributes to student success and helps us fulfill our New Wisconsin Promise to provide a quality education for every child and to close the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged students and their peers,” state Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster said.

To be recognized, students must receive federal Title I funding and be among the highest poverty schools in the state, based on free and reduced-price school lunch data. Additionally, student achievement on statewide reading and mathematics assessments must outperform the state average for schools with similar poverty rates and grade configurations and the school must have made adequate yearly progress for the past two years as defined under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Other Coulee Region schools recognized were: Blair-Taylor Elementary, Blair-Taylor High, Cashton High, Prairie View Elementary, Hillsboro Elementary, Hillsboro High, Kickapoo High, La Farge Elementary, La Farge Middle, La Farge High, North Crawford Elementary, Brookwood High, Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton Elementary, Seneca Elementary, Seneca Junior High, Seneca High and Sparta Meadowview Middle.

Each school will receive $1,500 and a plaque at an Oct. 13 ceremony at the state Capitol.

" Aye, there's the rub, Big Spender. 'American students are well behind international standards' does not compare La Crosse students to the national average, nor does it compare them to the international students. "

" Big Spender is correct. We are always told how American stuff is always best. Best medical care, safest food, most free speech, etc.

But spend five minutes looking at many other countries, especially in Europe and Scandinavia and you get a whole different perspective.

We are all cogs in a consumer machine and they don't want us to see that others are better off in many ways.

Just keep working and shopping, working and shopping, working and shopping..... "

" La Crosse folks are always handing out plaques to each other--what's up with that?

Comparing La Crosse students to students statewide misses the big picture: American students are well behind international standards. Americans, in general, look dumb to foreigners, and not without cause.

Send the plaques to those who truly deserve them: the Finns and the South Koreans--they're way beyond us. Last time I checked, we tested near the bottom amongst industrialized, or more properly, formerly industrialized nations.

Instead of handing out plaques, La Crosse, hand out physics books. Instead of turning on the TV, La Crosse students, exert yourself with intense study sessions inside a physics book. "
