Notebook: Wells has 'setback' with lower back injury

.
GREEN BAY (AP) — Green Bay Packers center Scott Wells had a setback with his injured lower back after returning to practice Monday, putting his availability in doubt for the season opener against Minnesota.

Since the end of the Packers' offseason practice program, Wells has been dealing with what has been described as a ``trunk'' injury involving his lower back muscles, limiting his availability in training camp practices and preseason games.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the team still was gathering information on Wells' injury.

``I think it was 16 days that he has been going through the rehab, and this is unfortunate,'' McCarthy said Tuesday. ``I know Scott is frustrated, but he had a setback at yesterday's practice.''

Wells' limited availability has forced the Packers to shift guard Jason Spitz to center for much of camp, and the Packers are still sorting through their options at guard. The Packers started Daryn Colledge at left guard and Tony Moll at right guard in their final preseason game.

Add in a nagging hamstring injury to running back Ryan Grant, and there are some concerns about the Packers' running game going into Week 1.

``It's a concern with the whole offensive scheme and what you are trying to do, but we've trained for this particular situation,'' McCarthy said. ``I didn't think we would be experiencing it in Week 1, but that's part of the game. I'm not really concerned about it. I'm just planning and working through it.''

McCarthy said Grant sat out Tuesday's practice because of soreness, but was likely to practice Thursday. The team does not practice Wednesday.

FLYNN'S WIN: Matt Flynn came into Packers camp as a seventh-round draft pick, but he'll go into Week 1 as the backup to Aaron Rodgers.

Flynn beat out second-rounder Brian Brohm for the primary backup job after outperforming Brohm in the Packers' four preseason games.

``I understand that it's a great opportunity,'' Flynn said. ``I understand that it's a good position to be in. But I also understand that I'm a rookie, and nothing's going to be given to you completely. I've got to keep going out there and progressing as a quarterback, showing them that I know what to do, I know how to do it, I know what the other team is doing on defense. I've got to always be prepared.''

Despite his inexperience, Flynn says he's ready to go if something should happen to Rodgers.

``I'm going to do my best to be prepared, and do my best to know exactly what the game plan is, know exactly what the defense is doing,'' Flynn said. ``I'm extremely confident in myself, and believe I can do it. But I'm going to be on the sideline and try to see everything that Aaron's seeing and try to give as much input as I can.''

NOTES: McCarthy said linebacker A.J. Hawk is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a chest muscle injury. ``A.J. has done exactly what we all thought he would do. He's way ahead of schedule, and that's the problem that you have when you have to make these types of decisions. The doctor has a criteria of what he thinks the timeframe may be, and then you have the individual, who has no history of being injured, and just attacked it. ... It's going to come down to when the doctor makes the final call. But if you asked A.J., he'd say he could play yesterday.'' ... McCarthy also said WR James Jones (right knee) and OL Josh Sitton (left knee) were ahead of schedule but their availability for Monday remains unclear. ... McCarthy wasn't thrilled with the Packers' practice Tuesday. ``Frankly, with the number of people that we have hurt and the number of people that didn't practice, when you see (tight end) Joey Haynos over there playing linebacker and things like that, there's some ugly spots in today's practice,'' McCarthy said. ``It didn't look very good. There will be a lot of things to correct and learn from, and that's tough.''
