UW-L's Moe regains starting QB job
Quarterback Griffin Moe erased every question mark about his health during the UW-La Crosse football team’s preseason camp.
Now, Moe is ready to make some exclamation points. Eagles coach Larry Terry named Moe, a senior, as the team’s starting quarterback during Tuesday afternoon’s practice.
UW-L plays Hardin-Simmons (Texas) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Winona, Minn., in the season opener for both teams.
Moe led the WIAC in passing last season, averaging 222.8 yards per game. But he suffered a concussion Sept. 29 and played the final four games of the year with a sore right (throwing) shoulder, later diagnosed as tendinitis.
“Griffin will be our starter,” Terry said. “When he’s healthy, he’s pretty good. Last year, he had a really good start, and when he faltered, it was after the concussion and shoulder problems. He’s proven that he’s recovered.”
Moe and the UW-L staff kept his shoulder injury quiet last fall. During spring drills, Moe said he had started to feel some pain in his shoulder during the Oct. 13 game
at Platteville, and Terry said he would keep a close eye on Moe during preseason camp.
“When you take the field, you want to be 100 percent and on all cylinders, and that’s what I feel now,” Moe said. “I’m excited to go out there again and make all those throws.”
Moe was almost perfect in his debut as the Eagles’ quarterback in last season’s opener at Hardin-Simmons. He completed his first 14 passes and finished 17 of 20 for 324 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in a 47-21 win.
“We’re approaching it as a brand-new (Hardin-Simmons) defense and a whole new season,” Moe said. “Last year is history.”
