Leland O. Alseth

WEST SALEM — Leland O. Alseth, 93, of West Salem died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem.

He was born at home on Sept. 30, 1914, near Taylor to Ludvig and Mary (Eid) Alseth. Leland attended area schools and then farmed before enlisting in the U.S. Army on July 14, 1942. He was sent to the 80th Infantry, 319 Reg. Company D Heavy Weapons Unit. Leland was wounded on Nov. 30, 1944, and received a Purple Heart.

On Sept. 12, 1947, he married Hazel A. Wagner, and they were later divorced. Leland started his plumbing career in Arcadia in 1952. He was a 56-year member of the Local 31 Plumbers Union. In Leland’s younger years, he enjoyed hunting and later he enjoyed traveling. In his most recent years, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include three children, LeRoy (Diane) Alseth of Melrose, Marie Walters (Kevin Kellicut) of West Salem, and Mary (Mike) Brown of La Crosse; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Archie and Milford Alseth; four sisters, Hulda Tomter, Josephine Herman, Goldie Alseth and Lila Norgaard; his special friend and companion, Alta Jean Lakes; and his former wife, Hazel.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. in the activities center at Struck-Klandrud American Legion Post 336, 731 Sand Lake Road, Onalaska. Concluding the celebration at 1 p.m. will be military honors performed by the Onalaska American Legion Post 336 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, West Salem, is in charge of arrangements.

Jerome L. Cadd

YORKVILLE, Wis. — Jerome L. Cadd, 58, of Yorkville was born to eternal life Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints St. Mary’s in Racine, Wis.

He was born Feb. 27, 1950, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lowel and Lilia May (nee Koehler) Cadd. He spent his early life and went to school in La Crosse. He has been a resident of the Union Grove, Wis., area for 25 years.

Jerry owned and operated JC & Son Construction, and he was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, parachuting and “building things.”

He was the devoted son of Lilia Cadd; dear father of Travis (Sherrie) and Tammy; proud grandfather of Brett, TJ, Kaitlynn, Brandon and Brody; beloved brother of Judy (Greg), George (Donna), Ralph (GenaRose), Darwin, Tim (Ann), Tom (Judy), Sue (Steve), Les (Doreen) and Jim (Arlene); and special friend to Barb. He is further survived by many, many friends in business and fun. He was preceded in death by his father, Lowel; and brother, Mike.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, after the visitation at Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home in Union Grove, with Chaplain Larry Williams officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Burial will take place on Monday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at So. WI Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.

Adeline Hoff

ARCADIA — Adeline Hoff, 88, of Arcadia died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center, Arcadia. Wozney-Killian Funeral Home, Arcadia, is assisting the family.

Lyle A. Marshall

Lyle A. Marshall, 80, of La Crosse died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.

He was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Dell, Wis., to Charles and Maude (Dolan) Marshall. On Nov. 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Theo Wilcox, and together they enjoyed the love of each other for 61 years.

Lyle retired from the La Crosse Trane Co. on Oct. 1, 1988, after 37 years of employment. He loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and playing his harmonica by the campfire.

In addition to his wife, Theo, he is survived by three children, Michael (Dorothy) Marshall of Chaseburg, Charles (Joyce) Marshall of La Crosse and Donna Troyanek of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl Marshall of West Salem; a sister, Doris (Meryle) Smith of Tomah; a sister-in-law, Doris Marshall of Tomah; many nieces and nephews; and his special friends, Ray and Jo Anne Seufert of Onalaska. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant grandsons; a granddaughter, Jeannie Rud; and two brothers, Francis and Richard Marshall.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, with Chaplain Allan Vrieze officiating. Burial will follow in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Lyle’s family would like to thank the Gundersen Lutheran hospice team for support and help, and a special thank you to Chaplain Allan Vrieze for being both friend and counselor.

Nancy Ann (Horn) Michael

Reed Arvid Peterson

GREENVILLE, Wis. — Reed Arvid Peterson, 91, of Greenville died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008.

He was born April 22, 1917, in Moline, Ill., to Arvid E. and Freida (Thomsen) Peterson. He married Beverly Schnell on May 31, 1941, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crosse. He had lived in La Crosse since 1935, including 1505 Vine St., for 25 years, then at 2654 S. 29th St. for 25 years. He moved to Greenville in 2006 to an assisted-living apartment at Living Tree Estates. He joined the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1940.

He graduated from Central High School, La Crosse, in 1936, attended Wisconsin Business University, and graduated from Western Wisconsin Technical College. He served in World War II in the 5th Army in Africa and Europe. He retired from the Trane Company after 42 years of service, the last several years with the industrial engineering department.

He is survived by three sons and one daughter, David (Julia) Peterson of Fort Wayne, Ind., Thomas (Kathleen) Peterson of Janesville, Wis., Nancy (Robert) Bekx of Appleton, Wis., and Gregory (Kathleen) Peterson of Winona, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Jason) McIntyre, Cynthia (Robert) Ward, Brian (Jennifer) Peterson, Andrew (Tennille) Peterson, Scott (Kelly) Peterson, Sarah Peterson, Ann (Nate) Barrett, Michael Bekx and Abigail Bekx; nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, June (Earl) Lewis; a brother-in-law, John (Mardell) Schnell; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, of 64 years; a brother, Willard Peterson; and a sister-in-law, Helen Carson.

He was a member of the Trane Credit Union audit committee for many, many years. He was a volunteer at the Lutheran Hospital print shop in La Crosse and an avid church worker for many years. He was director of the senior citizens band called the “Sweet Notes” and a 30-year member of the Happy Twirlers Square Dance Club.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, West Avenue and Cameron Street, La Crosse. Friends may call on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse, and on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Pastor Roger Sachs will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Memorials may be given to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, La Crosse.

Elmer N. Samuelson

BLACK RIVER FALLS — Elmer N. Samuelson, 88, of Black River Falls died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Pine View Care Center in Black River Falls where he had been a patient for the last three weeks.

Elmer was born in the town of Northfield, Jackson County, on Oct. 8, 1919, to Emanuel and Olga (Nelson) Samuelson.

He was raised in Northfield, and he attended the Chimney Rock Rural School.

He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945.

Elmer married Olga M. Hedberg in Stillwater, Minn., on April 21, 1943. The couple lived their entire married lives in Black River Falls. Olga preceded Elmer in death on Dec. 21, 1980.

He married Esther (Gumkie) Kahl on Dec. 15, 1984, in Black River Falls. The couple lived their entire married lives in Black River Falls. Esther preceded Elmer in death May 12, 2007.

Elmer was a lineman for Jackson Electric Cooperative for many years.

When he was younger, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He was a quiet man. He always hesitated and thought before he spoke.

He was a member of the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his sister, Marvel Sesvold of Pigeon Falls, Wis.; his stepson, Bruce (Dawn) Kahl of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; three stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Otis.

Funeral services for Elmer N. Samuelson will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Torgerson’s Funeral Home (715-284-4321) 408 N. Water St., Black River Falls. Pastor Eric Bakken will officiate, and burial with military honors will be in Riverside Cemetery in Black River Falls. Relatives and friends may call at Torgerson’s Funeral Home on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Robert ‘Bud’ Sargent

ONALASKA — Robert “Bud” Sargent, 87, of Onalaska died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. A full obituary will follow.

Mary Pauline Shimanski

Mary Pauline Shimanksi, 79, of La Crosse passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Center, La Crosse.

She was born in La Crosse on May 9, 1929, to Victor “Shimmy” and Ruby (Norton) Shimanski.

Mary received a bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison and taught for many years at schools in Oconomowoc, Portage and Watertown in Wisconsin. She later received a master’s degree in library science at University of Hawaii.

Mary enjoyed working outside in her garden, golfing with her friends, baking, playing bridge, photography, volunteering at Franciscan Skemp, and will be especially remembered for the care she gave for her parents.

Mary is survived by her sister, Barbara Leahy; nephews, Greg (Barbara) Shimanski, Scott (Jodie) Shimanski, Charles (Christiane) Shimanski, Charles (Alison) Leahy, Matthew (Debra) Leahy and Jonathan (Kristin) Leahy; nieces, Mary Siobhan (Peter) Ulrich and Susan Leahy; great-nieces; great-nephews; cousins, Kathy (Thomas) Cherf and James (Marlene) Shimanski; and many special friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas Shimanski; and an infant brother.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 130 Losey Blvd. S., La Crosse. The Rev. David Olson will be the celebrant, with interment at Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. A visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass at the church. Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Memorials are preferred to Franciscan Skemp Volunteers or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Parish. The family would like to thank the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare providers for their extraordinary care and support.

Eugene L. Smith

WHITEHALL — Eugene L. Smith, 85, of Whitehall died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in his home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in Jack Funeral Home, Whitehall, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church.

William ‘Patrick’ Welsh

BOSCOBEL, Wis. — William “Patrick” Welsh, 81 of Boscobel died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Boscobel Area Health Care, Boscobel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Boscobel. Burial will be in St. Phillips Catholic Church Cemetery, Rolling Ground, Wis. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kendall Funeral Home, Boscobel. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Boscobel Rescue Squad.

Roland ‘Rollie’ L. Young

ROCKLAND — Roland “Rollie” L. Young, 72, of Rockland passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Lakeview Health Center, West Salem.

He was born Feb. 14, 1936, in Sparta to Ralph and Gertrude (Richmond) Young. On Aug. 9, 1953, he married Phyllis Martin at Rockland United Methodist Church, and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Rollie was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany from 1955 until 1957. He was employed at La Crosse Cooler Co. for 29 years. Rollie then worked at Webster Lumber Co. for 16 years until his retirement on June 1, 2001, at the age of 65. He was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed hunting, golfing and farming. Rollie was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be sadly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; four children, Leonard (Linda) Young of Rockland, Steven Young of Onalaska, Pam (Kevin) Kastenschmidt of Rockland, and Sheryl (Tim) Langrehr of Bangor; seven grandchildren, Jason (Diane) Young, Ryan Young, Amy Young, Tina Young, Ashly Kastenschmidt, Aliyah Langrehr and Abby Langrehr; one great-grandson, Xander Young, and another great-grandchild on the way; two brothers, Harley Young of Illinois and Richard (Betsy) Young of Kansas; three sisters, Nina (Ronald) Garbers of Minnesota, Linda (Gerald) LeJuene of La Crosse, and Mary Cassel of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Shirley Young.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at Rockland United Methodist Church. The Rev. John E. Brouwer will officiate. Burial will be in Rockland Cemetery. Friends may call at Jandt Funeral Home, Hwy. 162 and Hattan Street, Bangor, on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.
