" Actually, according to the presentation this new virus would be more lethal to healthy adults than it would be to the very young, or old. It has something to do with the way the virus spreads in the lungs, and it spreads faster and more aggressively in healthy people. It sort of sounds counter-intuitive, but that's what she said. I'm sure "myturn" can find a conspiracy against the good taxpayers of LaCrosse in that little tidbit, too. And, yes, I am an apologist for a strong, local business community. We all depend on it. You would apparently prefer that the company who bid against LHI had won, and that all those people would be out of work. I'm sure that would have made you feel bitter, I mean better. "

" to balanced budget:
an epidemic of the proportions that they're talking about would affect young, old and in between alike. The reason that a "new" virus would be so devastating (as they have been in past epidemics) as I understand it, is because no one will have the immunity "memory" for it and so it's strictly a matter of each individual, some of whom may be able to fight it off, most of whom will not. Of course the very young and the very old will be most at risk as they always are. The article mentions 300 million deaths globally...life would never be the same. "

Your right, let's replace the word bird flu with the word terrorism and we have a story that was on the front page 2 weeks ago.
"We don't know where, we don't know when, but something is bound to happen terrorist related. But don't stop your daily life or be scared, but always be on the look out."
Good Grief, If my time is up, so be it. we are human and death is part of life. "

" You know the scrutiny that was started over three years ago by Park/Rec, handed to a Committee from within, anonymously picked up by the Mayor, given to WIPFLI Lacrosse, and then to WIPFLI Eau Claire, and now they are waiting for a "recommendation" from a 'Bean Counter'? What a view from the 'bench'! Sit down next to me. "
Myturn wrote on Sep 5, 2008 12:40 PM:
" Funny you should mention Banquets g-guy. My sources tell me that WIPFLI is done with the Pettibone Campground Audit. You know, the audit that was ordered for the operation with the fixed contractual rent. You know the fixed rent that is more than fives times the rent of the Logger's. You know only other Riverfront Banquet operation that is also on the Riverfront. Competing with waterfront ambiance, not to be confused with the new addition we taxpayers paid for at the Civic Center to hold more Banquets that is stark in comparison to waterfront? "

" "prosperous local businesses"? That received what was it, $80 million more than the next bidder? That proselytized the services of two former high ranking government officials to do so? And we are to believe that we are not contributing for this 'outsourcing' with history like this in the form of City taxpayer funds and Federal tax dollars as well? I would love to see before and after personal financial statements on these key people and more from inception to present. Naaawwww, nobody is making big money here. Hey taxpayers! How is that 'economic stimulus' coming at your house? How much you stash away in your cookie jar this year for that rainy day? Come on up Don and Tommy and we can compare with my neighbors. We are the one's without the Councilman until April 2009.. "

" g-guy- You are undoubtedly an insider/apologist, employee, and ignorant. I have one question for you. There are a only a couple thousand feet of directly adjacent downtown river frontage. Besides that there would have been many interested parites to build on that taxpayer prepared site. Where is the 'economic stimulus' from moving pre-existing tenants (as close as WIZM, and Cleary's) and commerce from older area buildings to 27 year creatively taxpayer financed new shiny/waterfront buidlings? PS-What about the rumor that there are 'stubbed off' mechanicals condusive to sectioning for apartments or condos? Anything to add to that? Rumor or real? "

" Good grief, you people are pathetic. I guess when you're sitting on the sidelines it's really easy to criticize those who are in the game. I hope she does retire and consult to LHI, and I hope they get more and more contracts, and I hope they hire more and more people, and build more and more buildings, and put on more and more banquets, and help to make this community more and more prosperous. That won't sit well with the bench warmers, but the rest of us are proud to the success of others, including prosperous local businesses. Imagine that. "
Myturn wrote on Sep 5, 2008 10:53 AM:
" Well then I have the answer. Dr. Julie Gerberding should retire. Then go to work for or consult for, LHI. Then they could wrangle another very, very lucrative contract. Planning is important for survival, Thompson said. Oh Yeah! Wait for the pandemic? Many of us are dying on the taxpayer vine presently. "

" It doesn't matter if you like what Drs. Gerberding and Osterholm have to say, the fact of the matter is (however crudely it may sound) humans are a herd like any other species and herds periodically are kulled. The medical community will only be able to do so much to avert it or lessen the effects of it. We can only hope (and I think anyone with any common sense knows that we will see it happen in our lifetime) that people can find a way to be strong and be good to one another when it does. "

the best defense against something like this is to try and live a healthy life style. limit intake of harmful substances. at the same time increase the amount helpful agents and "healthy foods".
