Update: Book bound over in baby’s death

.
A La Crosse woman pleaded not guilty today to charges that she caused the death of her newborn child and then hid the child’s corpse.

Indra Book, 20, entered the plea after she was bound over to stand trial on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and concealing a corpse.
La Crosse County Circuit Judge Scott Horne rejected a defense motion to have the homicide charge thrown out.

Book is accused of letting her infant die by not providing feedings or other proper care after giving birth alone on Aug. 17, 2007, at her former residence at 813 S. Sixth St., according to the criminal complaint.

Moments after Book was charged on June 18, public defender Vincent Rust challenged the homicide charge, contending Book's “omission” of care doesn't constitute the intent required to support first-degree intentional homicide.

La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke argues that Book’s failure to care for her daughter before and after birth supports a first-degree intentional homicide charge in the newborn's death.

Horne said there is enough probable cause to allow the state to proceed with the case.

A status conference will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 7.

" She may deserve a fair trial, but she also deserves the right charges filed against her, which should be 1st degree murder. I agree with the other posting, she ultimately has to face a higher power in the end. "

" I think this should be plea-bargained out right now. The state should pay for her sterilization,,banned from ever being alone with a person under the age of 18.There is the extent of my compassion. "

" I hope no one feels sympathy for her. The fact is that she didn't want the baby. She tried to abort the baby at five months (can you imagine the pain the baby would have felt?!). She had no clothes, no bottles, no diapers for the baby. Agencies were useless to her; she didn't want it. How can you starve a baby in 24 hours? I don't get that! She must of put the baby in the cooler w/o clothes. She put it in the trash and went on with her life. How could she sleep? It was easier to get rid of it rather than deal with it properly. She could of cared less! "

" Mack-
Maybe that's how the baby felt when it was in the cooler. "

" Re tralee: it seems a lot of us missed the sarcasm in that post. To Im Still Jackson: Please tell me you were being sarcastic as well, o/w that has to be one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read. This "woman" deserves to rot in prison for the rest of her miserable life. "

" She does deserve prayers as there is something severely wrong with her and she'll have to live with what she did for the rest of her life. She also deserves punishment to the fullest extent of the law. "

" Remember these words "Not guilty" this is gonna be a big waste of money going for murder one they should charge her with manslaughter and move on. First move by her lawyer will be to file for a change of venue. No Body and only circumstantial evidence to go on and this will be an up hill battle all the way and I cant help but think the DA is taking this personally because any other DA would realisticly and rationally realize that this is a case played on the heart strings of the jurrors and most of those jurrors are also parents and she is someones daughter too!
Could go either way and if aqquited she walks! "

REDDIE wrote on Sep 5, 2008 12:18 PM:

" let her rot in prison. and maybe we shouldn't feed her and she can see what it was like to die the way that baby did. "

REDDIE wrote on Sep 5, 2008 12:17 PM:

" I do not understand why you would want someone to pray for forgiveness of something that was such an evident act of carlessness and igorance.

If she did not want the baby she could have taken it to any hospital er, police station or fire station and they would have taking it to get the proper care it needed and adopted it out to someone who would be happy to have the baby. "

" Thank You - this woman needs to go before her peers & explain how it is that she let her newborn starve to death!!!! She should be put in a jail cell for a long time & made to think about the life she took from that innocent baby. She had choices & apparently she made a very wrong choice. Thank You Judge Horne for rejecting the motion to be thrown out. "
