A UW-L football fan’s guide to Maxwell Field

The UW-La Crosse football team will be playing its four home games in Winona, Minn., this season. Here are some things fans might want to know:

WHAT: Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium

CAPACITY: Around 4,500

WHERE: The stadium is located on the WSU campus on Sarnia Street between Winona and Johnson streets.

DIRECTIONS: From La Crosse, take U.S. Hwy. 14/61 north 30 miles to Winona, Minn. Turn right on Minnesota Hwy. 43/Mankato Avenue. Follow Hwy. 43 as it becomes

Sarnia Street, then turn left. Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium is located on the east side of Sarnia.

PARKING: Fans can park in WSU lots that are designated by color code — purple and gold — or park on any metered spot on the streets on campus. Simply check the color on the sign at the entrance of the lot. Avoid parking lots designated as a silver lot, as those are reserved and are monitored 24 hours a day.

FAN BUSES: UW-L students can ride a fan bus to Winona for UW-L football and soccer games for free (must have student ID) this fall. All football charter buses will depart from the north entrance of Mitchell Hall. Buses depart at 6 p.m. for Saturday’s game, and for the Oct. 11 game. Buses depart at noon for the Oct. 18 and Nov. 8 games. For more information, contact Derek Kockler, UW-L Student Association President, at kockler.dere@students.uwlax.edu.

The “L Club” is sponsoring an adult fan bus for Saturday’s game. Maximum cost is $10, but it could be less depending on number of passengers. The bus will leave from the Mitchell Hall parking lot at 4:30 p.m., then stop at Brother’s in Winona before the game. For more information, call the UW-L Foundation at (608) 785-8489.

TICKETS: There are no advance ticket sales. Tickets must be purchased at Winona State’s Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium. General admission tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for kids 12 & under. Flip seats cost $10. UW-L students are admitted free with student ID.

QUOTE: “I don’t care if we play on a parking lot or in front of five people or 50,000. Our guys play because they love it.” — UW-La Crosse coach Larry Terry.
