Daily TV grids will expand

.
We’ve had a few phone calls at the Tribune this week from people wanting to talk about TV listings.

OK, it was more than a few. And all had a similar message: We like our TV listings, so please bring them back.
The listings didn’t go away entirely when we discontinued our weekly Prime Time section. Instead of publishing a full week of the large TV grids on Saturday, we’re now publishing a grid every day. Doing so saves newspaper pages, and such cost savings are a good thing in these challenging economic times.

But the TV grid we’ve been publishing this week isn’t inclusive enough to satisfy many of our readers. So we’re going to expand the daily TV listings, starting by late next week.

Once the changes are in place, we’ll have a daily TV grid that includes listings from noon through 10:30 p.m. and includes all or nearly all channels that used to be listed in Prime Time.

We know even the expanded grid won’t satisfy everyone. But we hope it will be a good step toward meeting the needs readers expressed — more than a few times — this week.

" I, too, will be not renewing the subscription to the rag. The listings, and crossword puzzles were the main reason for buying it. You all are right, I can get all that on line, and my bird dies, no longer need it to line the cage. Thanks trib, you are saving me a lot of money. "

" What is the TRIBUNE trying to do to its faithful readers? Is it to make us beleive that we must live day to day and not look into the future to see what programs are being aired/or when the PACKERS are playing. Then you quit the LIVE, so we must again live day by day.You don't list the up coming events/happenings/ festivals. So we can't make plans for the up coming weekend by not seeing what is going on in the other parts of the area.We may be older, but we don't want to live just day by day. If you would just take the amount of paper that you would use every day on the TV listings and put them all together inserted into the saturday paper, there would'nt be any real difference in the amount of news print used and the people would be happy. "

" It is amazing how the Trib handled this change with just an "Oh by the way" statement. As stated by someone else, the Saturday paper was $0.25 more than the weekday paper. I assumed that this was due to the TV listing insert. But I guess that I learned again what the word assume means. Lets do like the City of La Crosse wants to do and hold a referendum on the issue to see what the subscribers want. Better yet, how about the editor just realize how stupid the idea was to drop the TV listing section, and just bring it back. "

" I want the Saturday Tribune TV guide Week returned as was.
If you need to save money, fire the looser whos idea this was. As is, you will loose more income in drop of sales. "

" I have e-mailed the Trib editor twice about this, but he doesn't seem too concerned about what customers think. Also, Charter plans to move the TV Guide channel to a digital tier--it won't be on expanded basic (analog) as of the end of this month. Granted, one can look up programming on the computer, but so much easier to have a section with all the info for the week right handy. They talk about cost, yet the Satuday Trib still costs $.75. Shouldn't it be $.50 like the rest of the week--no longer any reason to charge so much!!! "

" as some of you have posted-yes some of us do have computers. as for me, i am responding in my parents place. in their 70's, they have no use for, nor would they know how to use one. they have expressed to me their unhappiness over this change. if so many people are against it and they have let the trib know, why would they continue with their plan? there really isn't that much in the paper and i think a tv guide subscription would be cheaper in the long run. "

elocs wrote on Sep 6, 2008 5:43 PM:

" I use Zap2it.com and it has listing for up to two weeks ahead as well as info about each show and you can search when a program might be repeated. You can also check on local movies from there also. I've used it for years. I've probably saved over $200 over the years in not having to buy a paper for tv listings. "

" Lee Enterprises stock is down almost 80% for the year after a drop of 50% in 2007. They might be "cost cutting" themselves right out of business. "

" Elocs, I agree with you. I am going to cancel our subscription and start reading online. I am so disgusted with the Tribune. "

Just-A-Bozo wrote on Sep 6, 2008 10:39 AM:

" So you'd like it to be a government news outlet? It's a business. Businesses like to make profits. It's not a public agency. It doesn't have to represent all. If enough people feel like you do and cancel subscriptions then they will see that in the bottom line and make necessary changes. Obviously that hasn't happened yet. "

Margin of Error wrote on Sep 6, 2008 9:33 AM:

" A daily schedule is useless, we need to see the schedule a week in advance to set VCR for shows we want to see when we are gone. We will have to reevaluate our weekend subscription needs. "

elocs wrote on Sep 6, 2008 9:30 AM:

" Since anybody posting here obviously has a computer and is online, why does anybody need a paper to get the tv listings? I've gotten mine online for 10 years now and they're much more informational. Saves the cost of buying a paper. Besides, newspaper print keeps getting smaller and harder to read over the years. "

DJ: wrote on Sep 6, 2008 8:40 AM:

" I, for just one, and I know of others who have also cancelled, am truly fed up with the Tribune's weak response to public opinion. The paper which should be a public service has become more of profit making machine, screw the readership. They had a winner in the saturday section. It wasn't broke, it didn't need fixing. Sayanora, Trib, now where did I put that subscription ad for TV Guide.... "

waytogo wrote on Sep 6, 2008 8:19 AM:

" I too would gladly pay .25 cents for the Prime time.... How much more can it cost when the Saturday paper already costs .75 "

Just-A-Bozo wrote on Sep 6, 2008 8:12 AM:

" Or you could just bag the tube and go outside and do something active and productive. There are already too many large-bottomed people. "

jjp wrote on Sep 6, 2008 8:04 AM:

" Not good enough. My subscription ends in Oct. and I will not renew it. Besides, it's the tribune. Not like a real NEWSpaper. "

" Just another example of failed Democratic tax and spend policies, I guess. I for one will be supporting the new TV Guide online. Its REAL Christian perspective and firm pro-hockey mom stance will take me through the darkest and longest nights this winter. "

" Seems like they think they can just throw us a bone. Like someone just said about a candidate...He just doesn't get it...buy the Milwaukee Sentinel or the Wisconsin State Journal...they both have a weekly grid. Milwaukee in on Sunday....State joutnal in on Thursday. Or...bigfoot you have a great idea but...what do we know. We only buy the paper. At $20.00 a month...NOT worth it anymore. "

enuffalready wrote on Sep 6, 2008 6:40 AM:

cloud9 wrote on Sep 6, 2008 6:20 AM:

" Sure, publish it daily so if people want it, they have to buy a daily paper, instead of just the weekend. No thanks. "

bigfoot wrote on Sep 6, 2008 12:03 AM:

" How about publishing the Primetime TV listings as a separate item for sale at the outlets? I would gladly pay whatever the charge because it has its place beside my chair alongside the remote control. The TV Guide magazine is nothing more than a tabloid full of advertising and confusing listings. "
