Ernest ‘Ernie’ Hartmann

COTTONWOOD, Ariz. — Ernest Hartmann, loved and known as “Ernie,” 81, resident of Cottonwood, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Newark, N.J., to Frederick Ernest and Emma (Lange) Hartmann.

Ernie attended Utah State University from 1948 to 1952, from which he received his bachelor’s degree; later he attended the University of Utah from 1968 to 1972, where he obtained his doctorate’s degree.

Ernie taught parks and recreation for more than 20 years at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He was also a WWII veteran, having served his country with the U.S. Navy.

Ernie was always very active with the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He also enjoyed bird watching and had the opportunity for world travel.

Ernie leaves behind his wife, Beth Hartmann of Cottonwood; his son, Alan Hartman, with his wife, Mary Jo, of Salt Lake City, Utah; his daughter, Pam Lovejoy with her husband, Kim of Waukesha, Wis.; his sister, Lore Ullrich of Union, N.J.; and his grandson, Zeke Hartmann of Salt Lake City.

A memorial service will be held at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1377 Hombre Drive in Cottonwood on Monday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. After the service, a reception will be held at 4 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home, 1013 E. Mingus Ave., in Cottonwood.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Verde Valley Humane Society, c/o VVHS Building Fund, P.O. Box 1429, Cottonwood, AZ 86326; or to the Boy Scouts of America, c/o Grand Canyon Council, 2969 North Greenfield Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016-7715.

WARRENS — Verna (Vitcenda) Coen, 71, of Warrens died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Tomah Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Old Czech Cemetery, Yuba, Wis. Angela Weichert

SPRINGFIELD, Va./CALEDONIA, Minn. — Angela Weichert, 68, of Springfield and formerly of Caledonia died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at her home. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, is assisting the family.

Marlene Ann Stavlo

Marlene Ann Stavlo, 75, of La Crosse died peacefully in her home Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, after a short battle with cancer.

She was born May 30, 1933, in Mabel, Minn., to Robert and Helen Richert. On March 30, 1957, she married Richard Stavlo in La Crosse.

Marlene is survived by her husband of 51 years, Richard “Dick” of La Crosse; four children, Sandy (Steve) Swan of Lake City, Minn., and their daughter, Jenna Swan of Minnetonka, Minn.; Sue (Edwin) Fish of Holmen and their daughter, Stephanie (Paul) Casper of La Crosse; Rodney Stavlo and his children, Ryan and Kyle, all of Kasson, Minn.; John (Kim) Stavlo and their children, Kathleen, Jacquelyn and Molly, all of Deer Lodge, Mont.; and two brothers, Robert (Marie) Richert of Sparta and Howard (Tina) Richert of Mountain Home, Ark.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Olivet Lutheran Church, 2100 Bainbridge St., with the Rev. David Baldukas officiating. Friends may call at the church today from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Memorials are suggested to Olivet Lutheran Church. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family.

Roy J. Eddy

MERRILLAN, Wis. — Roy J. Eddy, 82 of Merrillan died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, both in Merrillan. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

Wallace Nordstrom

MELROSE — Wallace Nordstrom, 79, of Melrose died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Ettrick, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m Sunday and 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday, both at the church. Zwickey Funeral Homes-Melrose Chapel is assisting the family.
